"SO, THERE ARE 46 chromosomes in a human body," Skylar began hesitantly, and Will, who was sat crossed-legged opposite her, nodded encouragingly. "That means there's 23 pairs?"

Will cheered, and Skylar fell backwards onto the soft duvet in relief. "Finally," She sighed. "I thought we'd be here forever!"

Beside them lay a worksheet, haphazardly scribbled over with red crosses and the occasional green tick.

"I knew you'd get it eventually." Will murmured, going back to his own work, which, although messy, was covered in a lot more green than Skylar's.

"Thanks for the confidence, but I sure didn't." Skylar laughed, fiddling with the pencil. "At least I won't look like a complete dunce tomorrow."

It had been a few days since Skylar's tragic first day at Hawkins Middle, and the lasting impression her peers had gotten of her was the girl who couldn't even answer a single question. How pathetic.

Throughout Science lessons, Skylar and Will began talking a lot more, and what started as Will helping her with a few questions rapidly evolved into a friendship.

Taking a glance at the darkening sky, Skylar hopped off the bed, dusting down her clothes. "I best go," She frowned. "My dad will be back from work soon."

She definitely did not want to leave the Byers' home. It was comfortable, and it just felt so much warmer than her own house did. Not just in temperature, but just the overall aura of the family. There was no sour father casting his mood over the entire residence, no cruel words and threats.

"Be careful." Will warned, briefly taking his eyes away from the sheet.

"I always am!"

Reluctantly stepping out of the room, she sighed and walked over to where her shoes were, slipping those on. Looking outside as the wind rattled the windows in their frames, she wished she had brought a coat.

Just as she was about to step out into the chilly land outside, Jonathan stumbled out of his room, something held in his arms. He looked up, grinning when he saw her.

"Will told me you joined the AV Club," He began, and Skylar nodded kindly. "So I thought to give you this." He extended his arm, showing Skylar a camera. It was quite battered, clearly broken and fixed many times. "It's fine if you don't want it, I just thought you'd like something to do while the boys are fussing about radios - because they definitely will, they never shut up on those walkie-talkies-"

Skylar paused his rambling, smiling widely. "No, I'd love it." She reassured him, and Jonathan breathed out, "But I wouldn't want to take it if you need it."

"No, it's fine. This is my old one - I found it and fixed it when Will told me you were joining them."

"In that case," Skylar gently took the camera from him and placed it in her messenger bag. "I owe you."
