SKYLAR ENDED UP going home early from school, unable to cope. The teachers didn't try and stop her, they had all heard the news and seen the girl's shivering form.
When she arrived back at her house, she ran straight up to her room, completely ignoring her mother, who stood by the table with a fresh batch of cookies.
For the rest of the day she lay in bed, refusing to touch any of the food her mother brought and instead trying to purge any of the memories from her brain, trying to stop thinking about it.
Eventually she must have fallen asleep, because when she woke up again it was light, and way past school time. It wasn't like she was going to attempt to go into school - not after the previous day's events.
So she spent the day staring at the ceiling, occasionally doodling or messing with a bouncy ball as a way to pass the time. The air in her room was thick and musty, but Skylar couldn't summon the willpower to open a window - or even the curtains, for that matter.
She would have spent the rest of the day like that, too, if it weren't for her mother bashing on the door.
"Skylar, the chief's here - come downstairs." Skylar didn't reply, her mind whirring rapidly, and her mother's voice hardened. "Now, Skylar. This isn't time for playing games."
Skylar quickly threw on a jumper, walking down the stairs slowly and on tiptoe. Why were the police here? Was it about her dad? About Eleven?
Jim Hopper, chief of police, was sat on her sofa, slurping a cup of tea much like her father used to. That small similarity put her on edge, even though she knew there was nothing to worry about.
She settled herself on the armchair opposite him, while her mother hovered around them, shooting concerned looks to Skylar every so often.
"So," Hopper started, sitting up and watching Skylar with a calculating gaze, who squirmed slightly. "I'm gonna be blunt with you, kid. Will Byers, you know him? Teacher said you were close."
Skylar frowned. This wasn't what she was expecting. "Yes," She began cautiously. "We're friends - I sit next to him in Science."
"Right, well do you have any idea where he is? Now?"
Skylar shook her head, and the man sighed, itching his chin.
"He's missing. Didn't get home last night."
Skylar gaped, leaning back into the chair and resting her head in her arms. Hopper didn't seem phased by her reaction, and only leaned slightly closer, his tone slightly darker.
"I'll ask you again. Do you know where Will Byers is?"
Skylar's mother scowled at the harsh tone, pushing his shoulder back a bit. "How could she? She's been home all day, and all day yesterday."
