A few days after Lan Zhan had been stopped from dreaming at all, with XiChen replacing the talisman every day, Lan Zhan finally opened his eyes but he only spoke two words

'Wei Ying.'

He had said them with such sorrow and loneliness, with tears that fell before closing his eyes again that it was the end of XiChen and Master Lan's ability to keep this silent any longer. As it was, they had decided to keep WangJi's collapse a secret form everyone other than the one healer who now tended him, and SiZhui who came each evening to sit with him and read.

Apart from the man in bed, only four people knew just how close Lan Zhan was to just giving up his life.

'Uncle you stay with WangJi while I go and ask if Wei WuXian will come.' He didn't know if Wei Ying would agree to see Lan Zhan or just let loose another stream of .... truths he could not handle at the moment, but he had to try.

'I hope he will ... even with the way we treated him.'

'... I know. I will get on my hands and knee and beg him if I have to.' XiChen hurried over to the arena where Wei WuXian stood watching the juniors and saying single words and the boys seemed to understand and followed orders without thought. He almost stopped at the fluid movements of the juniors and how they all moved as one to the point it almost looked like even their robes moved in identical moves. No one, and nothing, was out of step. Remarkable. He thought. 'Wei WuXian, I apologise for interrupting your lesson but ... can I have a word with you please?'

Wei Ying turned and looked at the leader who he had managed to avoid all but a few times since arriving. He gave a small nod then moved away from the juniors only to turn back. 'Continue.' He snapped then went to Lan XiChen.

'I ... I am sorry to ask you this as I am sure you ... Lan Zhan collapsed just over three weeks ago and has been tended to in private. A healer has been tending him but there is nothing we could do other than to stop him dreaming.' He tried to find any Change in Wei WuXian's stance or if he tensed up but nothing Changed as far as he could see. He sighed. 'He woke up for the first time and called out your name. I know I have no right to ask this of you Wei WuXian but ... would you be kind enough to come with me ... he may tell you something that would explain his collapse.' He could not bring himself to say his brother had been watching his rooms when he collapsed. 'Please Wei WuXian.' He watched Wei WuXian turn and return to his students and he felt like crying and pleading to get him to come.

Wei Ying pointed his sheathed sword at SiZhui and instantly the junior stepped forwards.

'Everyone, take it from the top at normal speed, Jin Ling to the rear and watch.' He looked at Wei Ying and received a nod to tell him he did right.

XiChen watched as yet again the junior students all moved as one but this time; they moved even faster than before but still stayed in perfect unison.

'Do you want someone to watch over them?' he watched as without even answering Wei Ying pulled out a paperman, used a small sharp lump on the lips of his mask to cut his finger. Then he wrote on the paperman and let it go.

With a glance at the students he noticed the paperman float over and land on SiZhui's head and XiChen understood they would not slack off as they knew Wei WuXian watched through the paperman and would know it and that would result in a punishment. For the first time he knew of in the Cloud Recesses, the worst punishment students could think of was ... being removed from a class ... not just any class, Wei WuXian's class.

'Thank you.' He walked fast to his brothers' rooms and opened the door to usher Wei WuXian in, only to find the young man had not raced like he did. Wei Ying walked at a slower pace and slowly entered the room.

Wei Ying had walked slow rather than keep up with XiChen as he dreaded coming face to face with Lan Zhan since he arrived and did everything he could to stay out of his sight.

He made sure he only ever took his dip in the cold pool when he knew this man was busy with his family. He left his room at the last moment in the morning to make sure this man was already where he was meant to be. He refused to leave his room unless for class just so he never stumbled across this man.

This man.

This damn man who everyone placed above all.

I never wanted to see that cold expression or those empty gold eyes.

I never wanted to talk to him.

I never wanted to hear his voice.

Yet here he is, in the man's room just because he called for him. He walked slowly over and stood at the side of the bed with his arms crossed. That man lay under a blanket in his night clothes, his eyes moved under their lids and his brow creased.

'XiChen, the talisman failed a few moments ago and we have no more.'

'I don't understand.' He raced over to his brother and sat on the bed. 'WangJi, wake up please.'

Wei Ying wanted to sneer at this image of a loving brother tending to and worrying about his baby brother.

'XiChen, there is nothing we can do at the moment ....' Master Lan pulled his nephew from the bed so Wei Ying could see Lan Zhan. 'Please Wei WuXian ... is there anything ....'

'Wei Ying!' Lan Zhan yelled so loud he woke up, he opened his eyes and suddenly he flinched hard when he found the masked man standing over his bed with that same aura streaming off of him. 'W ... Wei Ying?' Lan Zhan's body trembled, his heart raced and his mind began to fog a little. He's here, my Wei is here .... But ... is it the real him .... Or am I dreaming and will I suddenly find myself back on that cliff ..... My Wei ..... Be the real you.

'Tell me?' Wei Ying did not soften his stance or voice. 'Why should I care for so much as a single heartbeat for what you are going through at the moment?' the twin gasps from beside him didn't shift his attention from the man in the bed. When he did not receive an answer he sat on the side of the bed and looked into Lan Zhan's eyes. Wei Ying did everything he could to stop his heart pounding so badly in his chest being this close to Lan Zhan. He placed his hands on his lap, gripped together, so the trembling could not be seen.

XiChen and Master Lan noted this move and frowned lightly at each other wondering if this whole character of Wei Yings was just .... An act to stop them seeing his pain. Was that kind of acting, so completely covering his pain, at all possible? They snapped back when Wei Ying spoke in that icy voice.

'Tell me ... why should I give a damn about what is happening to you? Why should someone who is not meant to exist, worry about anyone?'

XiChen stood in utter shock at the icy cold words of Wei WuXian. He brought him here in truth, hoping it would help both his brother and Wei Ying but ... how can this turn out right if Wei Ying does not open up his heart even a fraction. He seriously thought of asking the young man to leave his brothers room and even took a step, only to feel his uncle hold his arm and shake his head.

Master Lan knew whatever Wei Ying said or did in this room was well deserved by all of them, so he kept XiChen from going over and interrupting. If Wei Ying lashes out, they would have to deal with the aftermath later. Right now, they could do nothing but wait.

Wei Ying just sat there waiting for Lan Zhan to answer him.
