Chapter 11
My headphones were in my ears, my head against the wall as I laced up my shoes.
It was a nervous habit that I did before every game. Took out the laces and laced them back up.
The rest of the locker room was filled with noise of everyone else’s usual things before a game.
Brian was sitting next to me doing the exact same thing to his shoes.
Both of us were extra quiet tonight.
We’d talked to our dad today, and it always left a bit of a cloud whenever the conversations took place.
He was in the middle east.
We were in America.
He was in war.
We were worried.
The usual.
He was absolutely ecstatic to hear that I’d gotten a call from UT, and urged me to sign with them as soon as they offered.
I told dad all about Carly and our date and how much I was starting to like her.
I wasn’t sure was Brian talked to him about, but then again, he didn’t know what my conversation consisted of.
That was one of the only things we didn’t share with each other.
There was one thing I knew for sure.
And I was not in the mood to play a game tonight that we wouldn’t win.

“How the hell did that just happen.” I said, staring ahead as I drove home out of the parking lot.
Brian was silent.
“Seriously, how the hell did that happen.” I shook my head. “That team was amazing. They should not have lost to us.”
Brian nodded in agreement.
“And by so much? Holy shit our defense killed it out there.”
Brian nodded again.
“Why are you being so silent?” I frowned, glancing at him.
“What? Huh?” He asked, turning to look at me.
“Were you listening to a word I’m saying?” I rolled my eyes, looking back at the road.
“Sorry I think uh, I think Jess and I might be in a fight because she’s not talking to me...” Brian frowned.
“You and Jess? In a fight? Please. Like you’ll ever fight.” I laughed, pulling into Grandma’s driveway.
Brian shrugged, still looking down at his phone.
“How’d the game go?” Carly asked happily, looking up from the couch as we walked in.
It was still slightly weird seeing her here everyday after our date. Because whenever I saw her, all I wanted to do was keep to her to myself and spend all of my time with her.
“We won.” I said happily.
“No I’m not the one ignoring you! You’ve been dodging my calls all day!” Brian suddenly said into his phone.
“Because I’m not about to drop everything and come across the country at your request!” He exclaimed as he jogged up the stairs.
I heard the door to our bedroom slam a minute later.
