Tohru's POV
I heard the boys yelling at each other last night. I don't know what they were fighting about, but it sounded more serious than their usual arguments. Kyo was a lot more fired up than usual. Even worse, Kyo hasn't said a word to me since dinner last night, and we're almost to school. We walked the whole way in complete silence.
"Kyo, if you want to talk about anything-"
"Forget it. I'm fine."
"Oh. Okay. I'm sorry."
He's usually at least a little more open than this. Whenever he fights with Yuki, he usually vents to me about it after. We finally got to school, but he didn't even walk me to class, just split off from me at the front doors.
"Miss Honda, good morning. Where'd that cat run off to?"
"Oh, I'm actually not sure. He seemed upset, I'm really worried about him."
"I could talk to him if you want me to."
"I'm not sure if that would be a good idea or not. Don't you think it's about your fight last night?"
"I'm sorry Miss Honda, I didn't know you could hear us. I don't think he's mad. Maybe a little, but that's not why he's acting strange. Don't worry yourself too much okay?"
"Right, I won't. Should I still try talking to him."
"If it's natural, but don't go out of your way. He'll come to you. I'm sure of it."
"Oh, alright. Thanks Yuki."
He just smiled and walked away, just like that. Those two boys are a mystery. Hana and Uo-chan both skipped to go get food at a new restaurant that opened up, but I couldn't go because I have to be in class or mom would be upset. Yuki is going to lunch with his student council group. So that leaves Kyo and I for lunch, if he'll even look at me.
"Okay students, turn your books to page 129."
I still can't believe we're that far into the book already. Kyo won't look at me. He's got to know I'm looking at him, you can feel it when people stare at you. So why won't he look at me?
"Tohru Honda, is your head up in the clouds again? Open your book and read section 3 out loud for us."
"Oh, right! Sorry ma'am!"
Kyo didn't laugh, smile, or even look after that. Did I do something to hurt him?
I got to the lunchroom early today! There's barely anyone here.
"I'll just have rice and miso soup please. Thank you."
When I got to our meet-up spot, I sat down in the grass and waited. 5 minutes. 10 minutes. 15 minutes. Lunch is halfway over with and still no Kyo. I must've done something to make him mad.
"Hey."
I turned around. There he is.
"Kyo! Where have you been? Where's your lunch?"
"Here."
Here he is, face red, handing me a small cardboard box decorated in lace with my name written on the top in bright pink.
"Oh! It's for me? Thank you!"
I opened it up to see a vanilla cupcake with pink frosting and white edible lace and pearls.
Well I can rule out the possibility that he's mad at me now, because this would be a weird way to express anger."Kyo! Thank you so much! I'm so excited, it's so cute!"
"I just picked it up from across the street, it's no big deal."
He's lying. The bakery he got it from requires you to call in beforehand. There aren't any cakes as nice as these on hand there.
His face continues to get more red as he sits down."Did anyone ask you?"
"Hm?"
"You know, like Yuki or Momiji or someone else?"
"Ask me what, I'm confused?"
"The dance idiot."
"Oh right! No, neither of them did! I'm helping Yuki ask Machi tonight, and Momiji is still a junior, so he can't go, it's exclusively seniors! Also, I don't think anyone else is planning on asking me, at least that I know of."
"Well do you want to?"
His teeth are clenched and his fists are balled up. His face is turned away from me.
"I mean, I'm planning on attending, but I don't think I'll stay the whole time. I might get bored third-wheeling with Yuki and Machi. Are you planning on going Kyo?"
He blushed even harder.
"Do I have to spell it out for you?"
"Huh? I guess you do, because I'm confused."
"I'll take you to the stupid dance okay?"
Was that what he was trying to do this whole time? Ask me to go with him?
"Okay!"
I couldn't help but smile. He's so adorably awkward, I can't help it. I'd hug him if I could.
Kyo's POV
That smile. I'll never get tired of it. When I can't see her anymore, it'll stay engraved into my brain. Walking to class with her every day, it's something I'll miss. Her standing next to me, smiling up at me.
"We're here. Don't miss me too much."
I bonked her head with the side of my hand and she looked up at me.
"I'll try! I'll meet you at the front doors!"
She has the blue ribbon that Yuki gave her for white day in her hair. The damn rat lied to me about wanting to ask Tohru. Why? That idiot.
"So, did you do it?"
I look up to see Yuki, Momiji and Haru staring at me.
"Yes Kyo! Did you ask Tohru? I would've done it first if I was a senior! I'd take Tohru on the perfect date-"
"Shut it Momiji, let the kitty have a word."
"What the hell are you two doing here? I can kind of understand Yuki-"
"Yuki told us everything about your heartfelt speech last night about wanting to go to the dance with Tohru, he said you were in tears!"
"There were no tears involved, and anyways, the damn rodent lied and said he was going to ask her if I didn't. I still don't know why I have to take her."
Yuki snatched my shirt, and held it tight.
"I still don't know why you're complaining. You get to escort Miss Honda to the dance, and it will be the best night of her life. No exceptions."
With that, he released me, and walked straight past me. Damn rat, what does he think he's talking about?
Whatever. I need to start planning anyways. That's more important than whatever he said.
