"Hey Freddy, if you're gonna take all morning, can I go ahead?" I joked, crossing my arms and leaning against the wall.
"Quit your whining, I'll be there in a sec." The door opened a minute later, and an annoyed looking Freddy walked into the hallway.
"You take longer than me to get ready." I teased, beginning to walk down the hall with him.
"You take longer than me to get ready." Freddy repeated in a high pitch voice, imitating me. "Shut up." He said, sticking out his tongue.
"Wait, is apartment 20 moving in today?" I asked, seeing the door wide open. We began walking down the stairs, past the old crazy lady.
"Yeah, I guess. You're getting a new neighbor." We walked past the pool, and Freddy was first to the door, when it suddenly flew open, a loud kia as it swung open.
Freddy flew back and onto his butt, making me crack up in laughter. Behind the open door, a kid about 6'0 stood with a shocked expression. I continued to laugh as Freddy picked himself off the ground, glaring at me.
"I'm so sorry, that was stupid of me." The boy said, setting down a suitcase and letting his bike lean on the door. His tone was very apologetic.
"S'okay. I should've looked. You the new people at 20?" Freddy asked as I stopped laughing, walking over to the two.
"Yeah." The boy answered, nodding.
"Freddy Fernandez. 27." Freddy stuck out his hand.
"Daniel LaRusso." The two shook hands, before Daniel looked over at me.
"Hi. Marie Johnson. 19. New Neighbor." I stuck out my hand, which he shook. His hand was smooth, but his handshake was firm. "Nice kick. I've never seen kim get knocked down that fast." Daniel chuckled, earning me a glare from Freddy.
"Let me help you." Freddy grabbed the suitcase that was on the ground. "Where ya from?" Daniel and I followed, Daniel dragging his bike as we walked by the empty, disgusting pool. I saw Daniel grimace, before answering Freddy.
"New Jersey." I looked at him, furrowing my eyebrows.
"What are you doing out here?" I asked, a small smile on my face.
"My mom got a job with a company out here. Rocket computers." He raised a hand sarcastically. "Flight to the future." He said in a sarcastic tone, making me smile a bit more.
"Never heard of it." Freddy said as we neared the stairs.
"It's up and coming." I nodded, chuckling a bit. "Hi ya, pup." He scratched behind the dog's ear, as we stopped by the old lady. The dog wagged his tail, panting in the heat.
"This place is a dump. You should go back to New Jersey." I looked at the old lady, a bit confused.
"How'd you know I was from New Jersey?" Daniel asked, tilting his head.
"Because I'm from New Jersey. I got a nose for my own." She tapped her nose, smiling at Daniel.
"Oh yeah? Where you from in Jersey?" Daniel asked, leaning against his bike.
"Parsippany. And I never should have left." She said, shaking her head.
"Hey, my uncle Louie is from Parsippany." The old lady looked at him, excited.
"Louie Fontini?" Daniel shook his head.
"Louie LaRusso." Her excitement died, and she looked at her crossword. Freddy shook his head and continued up the stairs, Daniel following as I gave the dog a final pat before following.
"She's missing a few screws." Freddy said, making Daniel look back at the old lady.
"She's alright." I smiled at Daniel, nodding.
"Hey, what was that? Karate?" Freddy asked, attracting Daniel's attention.
"Oh, yeah." I looked at Daniel.
"Have you been doing it long?" I asked.
"Yeah, for a while." Daniel responded.
"Ever used it?" Freddy asked as we reached the top of the stairs.
"Coupla times." He shrugged, heaving his bike over the last step.
"Bet you can kick some serious butt." Daniel shrugged again, modestly. I chuckled before Freddy pointed at me. "Marie knows some karate too." I waved him off, shaking my head.
"Not much." I replied awkwardly, rubbing my neck.
"She's pretty good, won't teach me though. Maybe you could one day." Daniel shrugged, with a smile.
"Sure." Freddy put the suitcase down before standing tall.
"Well, I've gotta get going. I'm gonna be late to meet up with some friends. Bye." Freddy walked back to the stairs and disappeared, leaving Daniel and I.
"What are you doing tomorrow?" I asked, my hands in my pockets.
"Probably nothing. Why?" Daniel asked, smiling a bit.
"Well there's a big party at the beach. Sorta like an adios summer thing. Wanna come?" Daniel thought about it before smiling.
"Sure." I smiled wider, happy.
"Great. I'll get you in the morning." Daniel smiled, leaning his bike on the wall.
"Great."
"Um, well, I'll let you be now. Enjoy the new apartment." Daniel smiled as I backed up towards my door.
"Thanks, I will. See you tomorrow." I smiled and waved, opening the door.
"Bye. See you tomorrow." I walked in the apartment and closed the door behind me, smiling to myself. Maybe living here wasn't so bad after all.
