Everything started out as a pretty normal selling day, like always. All the newsies woke up bright and early, and the newsies lodge was soon emptied. A newsie by the name of Racetrack Higgins had gotten up, gotten dressed, and grabbed his infamous cigar before getting his papers. He and Albert had walked to the stand to get their papers, ready to go sell, when Jack called over to Race.

"Race, c'mere," Jack shouted, and Race walked over to Jack, who was standing next to Davey and Les.

"Race," Jack started, "you know how ever since the strike ended, there hasn't been any fights or anythin'? No ones been soakin' anyone, not even dem brooklyn newsies." Jack said, his accent pretty thick for a manhattan boy.

"Y-yeah?" Race questioned, a little confused why it was a big deal.

"Well, news is goin' around that Spot hasn't been uh.. at his best," Jack continued.

"And?" Race grew impatient quickly and took out his cigar.

"Well, we might 'ave to go check on him," Jack finished.

"Who? And why do I have to?" Race prodded further, curious about why Jack wanted Race to go.

"Probably just you, Davey, Les," He said, motioning towards the two boys standing next to Jack, "Crutchie, and maybe some of da boys for some back up, but dey won't be doin' much of da talking. And I'm bringing you since you're my second in command, idiot," Jack replied jokingly.

"Oh yeah," Race said, scratching the back of his head sheepishly, "I forgot about that." Jack laughed, and walked over to a nearby bench and got up on it so that all the newsies were able to see him better.

"Hey, Davey, Les, Crutchie, come on! And maybe," Jack thought for a moment, deciding who to bring for backup, "Buttons, Jojo, Henry and Elmer, you guys are backup."

"Alright boys, let's get a move on!" Davey stated, looking a little excited. Race tried to hold in his laughter as he saw Crutchie make eyes at Jojo. Jack smirked and started yelling at everyone to go. Crutchie stayed back, talking to Jojo behind the rest of the group.

They had reached a couple of blocks before the bridge, when they realized that Elmer and Buttons weren't behind them. Finch ran and found them both in an alley way, trying to hold in laughter at the look on their faces. They had been caught in an alley way about to kiss.

"Boys, what are you two doin'? We still got another hours worth of walkin'!" Jack lectured them, clearly annoyed. Jack hadn't realized that Elmer had pulled Buttons in for a kiss, and when Jack saw, is face flushed in protest and said, "Really? Buttons?! I expected more from you."

"Yeah, like you wouldn't do it with Davey," Elmer rolled his eyes and held Buttons hands as they continued on the walk, all the newsies stifling a laugh, including Davey, as Jack blushed and stuttered out,
"Well- I- just keep going."

Race nearly cried from laughter as he saw Crutchie looking like a tomato around Jojo.

"Crutchie!" Race whisper-yelled, and motioned for Crutchie to join Race closer to the front, breaking conversations with Jojo for a minute.

"Yeah Race, what's up?" Crutchie grumbled, still looking back at Jojo, who had moved on to what seemed like an extremely interesting conversation with Finch.

"The question is, what's up with you and Jojo?" Race elbowed Crutchie jokingly. Crutchie was flustered, and his blush spread up to his ears, slightly embarrassed that his friend was able to find out who he liked so easily.

"What? I mean... nothing? Why would you ever-" Crutchie stuttered.

"Save it," Race laughed and cut him off, "I know you like him. I mean, are you gonna tell him you like him?"

Crutchie sighed and glanced back at Jojo once again, who smiled at Crutchie.
"Maybe? I doubt he likes me back though," Crutchie bowed his head a little in sadness.

"Hey, don't think like that, I've seen the way he looks at you. Just ask him!" Race encouraged Crutchie.

"I- well, I might as well. But not now, maybe once we get back to the lodge." Crutchie decided. A look of fear flashed across his face briefly, but Race knew Crutchie was going to ask Jojo. Crutchie had never backed down from something that scared him, and he sure wasn't going to start now.

"Good enough," Race laughed at his friends antics, "now, go and talk to him, you aren't that good at sneaking in glances you know." Crutchie laughed, and walked behind to continue his conversation with Jojo, as Race set his eyes on the large gleaming Brooklyn bridge ahead of him.
