It was the last day you would spend here. Sighing, you latch up your suitcase and heave it off the bed you've slept on for the last fifteen years. These past six months, its been really clear. Cedric is not coming to his senses. He is smitten, and he wants to be there. "I can't do it anymore," You begin hauling the suitcase towards the door. "That's not the man I love."
Two days ago
"Leave? But your a valuable worker here. Is something troubling you?" Baileywick questioned, staring quizzically at you.
"No, Baileywick, its not like that." You glance down at the floor. Why is Baileywick so intimidating? You've know him for fifteen years, one would think you'd be used to this by now. "I just want a change. I'm tired. I want something different."
"I've been the castle steward for half my life (Y/N), I can tell when someone is lying to me." You wince, and look up as you feel a comforting hand on your back. "But its not my place to pry. You are always free to leave when you wish. Do you have a plan?" Baileywick quietly checks his watch, and then moves to go. "I need to inform His Majesty of his daily schedule. Come see me later and I can write you a letter of recommendation provided you want to continue your work in a different place. Just give me two days to find a replacement." Baileywick curtly bows, and starts to walk down the hallway.
"Wait!" You call out. He turns and gives you a impatient look. "Do you mind not telling anyone I'm leaving," you spill out quickly. "I just want to leave quietly." Baileywicks face softens, then he nods. Breathing a sigh of relief, you carry on with you day.
Present day
Huffing, you pull your suitcase down the last of the stairs. Standing outside of the castle, you turn and glance at the majestic building. Slowly, you skim over all the towers, the stain-glass windows, the vines climbing the stone walls. You take it all in, comitting it to memory for the last time. "It's been a good time. But now I have to say goodbye." Your resolve falters as your eyes land upon the small tower, slightly separated from the rest. Cedric's tower. The place most of you memories reside. Cedric was the first friend you managed to make in the castle, somehow. The prickly sorcerer was not easy to get along with, but with Sofia's help and your brutal affection he had improved so much. Well, the keyword being Had. You feel your fingernails dig into your skin as you remember the horrid vixen that had interfered. She stole Cedric and broke everything you and Sofia had fixed. And Cedric welcomed it with open arms.
"(Y/N)!"
Oh speak of a princess. You turn away from the tower and smile at the princess running down the stairs. She was twenty now, but her heart was the same as when she was eight. You sweep down into a low curtsy. "Good day, My Princess." Sofia frowned at you, and tugged at your ar.
"Don't tease me (Y/N) you know I hate it when you talk formally." Sofia let go of your arm, and then looked sadly up at you. "Baileywick told me where you were. Are you really leaving?"
You hesitate. "I'm sorry Princess." You feel burning hot tears fill your eyes. "I can't stay here anymore. Not like this."
"So you're just running away? You are just going to leave things like this?!" Sofia's voice rose as she grabbed both of your hands in hers. "She's hurting him (Y/N)! I'm sure we can get through to hi-"
"DON'T YOU THINK I'VE TRIED?" You cry out bitterly. "I've done everything I can for him! He wont listen. He doesn't want to listen." Pulling your hands away, you turn and pick up the suitcase from off the ground. "The Cedric that I know? He's gone. I don't know who this man is. And I do not want to know. I am done being shut out. I am through with having to stand around and pretend for him. I am not his friend. That blueberry headed twit that sucks up to a wench who is only using him for his status and money?" You turn, and give Sofia a bitter sweet smile. "He means nothing to me. And he never will."
"(Y/N)..." Sofia spoke gingerly, and a wave of guilt washed over me.
"I'm sorry princess. I let my temper get the better of me." I give her one last curtsy. "If you'll excuse me, I need to catch the delivery man before he heads to town. I don't want to have to walk." Straightening up, you hold back your tears and flash a wide smile. "Its been a honor to serve you and to be able to call you friend."
Sofia meets my eyes, and gives a reluctant smile back. "Likewise. Safe travels."
As you and the princess part ways, you spare one last glance back at the tower of the man who started it all. Who knew the story would end up like this? You certainly did not see this coming back when it was just the three of you. Watching Sofia's magic lessons, helping Cedric prepare spells and potions, cleaning up after failed experiments, those days were full of laughter. Its a shame that those days had to end. Shaking your head as if to rid yourself of those memories, you give a cheerful wave to the delivery man and take your seat at the back of the wagon.
"I did love you dearly. But its time to move on. You say you found your happiness. So now its time for me to find mine."
"I guess not all stories get happy endings."
