The ride back home was quiet. Austin kept driving while I sat beside him, on the passenger seat. The road before us was empty, only a couple of cars were going the opposite way we were heading. A couple of minutes later we were at my house. He hopped out of the car and skittered over to my side helping me out, but he didn't say a word whatsoever. He barely made eye contact. I awkwardly looked down to the floor while we walked to the main entrance of the house. We entered and I left my keys at the table and he stood there quietly. "You want something to drink ?" I asked breaking the silence. He shook his head in response. I nodded and made my way towards him, "I'm going up stairs....wanna come ?" I asked and he nodded still avoiding my eyes. I started hopping up step by step and he slowly followed behind. A couple of times I lost my balance and he quickly caught me, pushing me a little by little with his arm.
"Don't worry, I'm right here." He said and I finally made it all the way to the top. I walked passed all the doors in the hallway, mine at the end of the hall but I looked up to the ceiling. "What ?" He asked and I looked over at him.
"I'm going to the roof." I responded and he gave me a puzzled look. "Come on" I gently said and I pulled a string, and then out came a latter where I could go up to the attic.
"There's ghosts up there" Austin said making me chuckle. Even at the most emotional moments he could be goofy. Always trying to ease up the tension.
"Don't worry...they don't bite, just be quiet and they won't harm you." I whispered trying to make it sound like there was something. He half smiled and I shook my head and started climbing up. The attic was small. Boxes piled up throughout the small space, filled with old things we never used, or never was important. The air smelled of old objects and dust.
I walked over to the window and opened it, being exposed to a hard swoosh of air rushing in, filling the small, dark room. I looked out and the bright sun was shining, with a pretty bright yellow. The green trees and grass from the other neighbor's lawns made it look like a little wonderland you'd read in a story book. I looked back into the dark room, with the little beam of light entering into it from the open window. "Come on" I smiled and I sat onto the windowsill, I tucked my head going to the other side and then I transferred my legs so my whole body was outside.
I pushed my body up with my arms and hovered over to where i wanted to be at. Not trying to scratch my pants from the rusty, scratchy surface of the roof. I look over to the window and then came Austin. He got out a little easier since he didn't have a Broken/ injured leg.
"Why are we here ?" He said puzzled. I looked at him and then patted the space beside me. He sat down and we were both staring out into the nice view.
"Tell me what happened when you were gone" He still didn't understand what I was talking about, but then I moved my hand over to his and held it gently. "Listen... I have no idea what you did when you were gone...and You don't know what I did either...so how about we tell each other" I shrugged. His eyes saddened and looked away.
"I can't even if I wanted to Amy..." He said letting go of my hand. He turned his back to me and plopped his arms onto his knees looking down. "You wouldn't see me the same way.."
I was afraid of the truth. I really was, but this boy needed someone to open up to. He needed someone to talk to without him getting judged....and I was willing to be that person. No matter how bad it was, I was willing to hear every single word he had to say.
"Maybe I'll be a little surprised...but... You know I love you. No matter what, I'll still love you Austin... I'm here to tell you it's going to be fine. No matter what." He picked up his head a little and sighed deeply. He turned to look over at me with an expression I couldn't quite read.
