"Where is Taehyung?"
"He was here just a minute ago," the male replied, looking around.
I nodded and squinted to adjust my vision in the flashing disco lights. The pulsating beats of "Shameless" by Camila Cabello blared through the speakers, making it almost impossible to hear Jimin, who stood right beside me. It was our college Farewell Party, and the atmosphere was electric. The room was filled with students, many of whom were heavily drunk, swaying and grooving to the pop music. Glittering decorations hung from the ceiling, and the air was thick with the mingled scents of perfume and alcohol. I scanned the crowd, hoping to catch a glimpse of Taehyung amidst the chaos.
I was so engrossed in enjoying the party that I lost track of time. When I finally checked my phone, it was already midnight. I couldn't believe how late it had gotten. This day had been incredible, one that would surely go down in my memory lane. As I bid farewell to all my friends, I felt a pang of nostalgia. It had been a great year, and I knew I was going to miss everyone so much. Even our professors had become emotional during the farewell ceremony, their voices cracking as they wished us well.
I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I had completed four years of college. It seemed like just yesterday when I first walked through the campus gates, sporting thick glasses and lugging a huge backpack. No wonder I was labeled a nerd back then. But everything changed when I met my gang, especially Taehyung. Our group became quite famous in college, not just because the boys looked like Greek gods, but also because of our unbreakable bond. No matter what, we always stuck together.
One particular memory stood out. I still remember the day when Jin got into a fight with a group of seniors. Without hesitation, the other six boys jumped in to defend him. Even Jisoo, Lisa, and I joined the fray, acting like thugs and beating the seniors black and blue. We ended up getting suspended for a week, but it only strengthened our bond.
A thin smile crept across my lips as I reminisced about those days. Here I was, standing as a freshly minted Software Engineering Bachelorette, soaking in the last moments of our farewell party. The room was still buzzing with energy, the disco lights flashing in rhythm with the music. Despite the late hour, it felt like the night was just beginning. Suddenly, someone snapped me back to reality.
"Y/N? Are you not going home yet?"
"Hey!" I acknowledged Lisa. "I... um... was just about to go. Are you leaving?"
"Yes, my oppa is here to pick me up," she replied, her lips forming a sweet smile.
"Okay then, bye. Text me when you get home."
She looked at me with teary doe eyes. "I will miss you."
I didn't wait any longer and hugged her tightly. "Miss you too, darling!"
"What about me?" Our platonic romance was interrupted.
"Jisoo! Come here, you pabo!" Lisa exclaimed, pulling her into the hug. We shed some happy tears before parting.
"Don't forget about our get-together next week!" Jisoo narrowed her eyes at us.
Lisa and I giggled from ear to ear and replied in unison, "We won't!" As the girls left, I realized I was still looking for someone.
Taehyung and I hadn't spent much time together today. We both prioritized our friends since it was our last day together as college students. Our relationship began with friendship, and we both believed it was the foundation of our bond, even stronger than love. I had spotted him once or twice with Jin and Jimin, but then he vanished into the crowd, probably busy catching up with other batchmates.
Suddenly, a notification buzzed on my phone. It was a message from Taehyung: "I love you very much."
I blushed and quickly replied, "But I love you more." To my surprise, he went offline without seeing my reply.
"Where the hell is that boy?!" I muttered to myself as I made my way to Jungkook, who was engaged in a drinking competition with Hoseok. "Are you two planning to spend the night together?"
"Geez! Never!" Jungkook pretended to puke at the thought, while Hoseok, clearly very drunk, was leaning heavily on the counter, his face flushed and eyes glossy. He looked on the verge of passing out. "Oh Y/N~ I'm going to miss youuuuuu," he slurred, his face streaked with a mixture of tears and mucus.
I wasn't surprised by Hoseok's emotional display. He tended to get overly sentimental when drunk, as if all the sunshine had been drained from his life. "Now who will take care of this mess?" I asked Jungkook, ignoring the weeping Hoseok.
"Don't worry, Yoongi will take care of it," Jungkook replied, pointing to Yoongi, who was dozing off on a couch in the far corner of the room.
"You know Hoseok can't handle heavy drinking; why do you provoke him?" I scolded Jungkook, who responded with a sheepish smile. "Naughty boy! You know what, I will break those bunny teeth of yours one day!"
Jungkook's grin widened. "You won't get that opportunity anymore."
"We'll see. Anyway, did you see Tae?"
"Yes, I saw him heading towards the terrace."
"Thank you."
"Ahhh, blushing...?" Jungkook teased.
"Shut up, bunny!" I snapped, my cheeks heating up. Taehyung had just texted me "I love you," and now he was on the terrace. No wonder my heart was fluttering with joy. But Jungkook didn't need to point it out so vividly.
I made my way to the terrace, my mood euphoric and my steps light. However, what awaited me there was the darkest surprise of my life—something that would change my life's course forever, something that would take away my smile, my tears, my happiness, my emotions—everything from me.
