( wolf moon; pt.i )
THE coarse corner of the page rubs against the pads of her fingers as she looks through the pages to see how many more she needs to read before the end of the chapter. She had compromised that this would be the last chapter she would read, although that also happened to be the case with the chapter before that, and the chapter before that, and— well, you get the idea. Her eyes squeeze shut in an attempt to rid herself of the tiredness in them. She would be so much more willing to stay up if there wasn't school tomorrow.
It's now——Maddie marks the page with her thumb to not lose her place as she reaches over to her phone——10:47pm. Okay, it doesn't seem that late but when put into context and taking into consideration that she has to wake up earlier in comparison to the times she's been waking up through the Christmas holidays, it's late. She made a deal with herself that she would be in bed before eleven. She returns her attention to the book with a little more urgency but forces herself to read slowly so that she doesn't miss anything and then be extremely confused when something about it is mentioned in a later chapter.
She shakes her head, reaching the end of the paragraph before she dog—ears the corner of the page and closes the book. Maddie then shuffles down the bed to hide herself completely under the covers, placing the book under her phone before switching her light off. Her head leans back against the pillow, eyes watching the faint light shine through her curtains, and she groans quietly. Stupid Christmas decorations and forgetting to close the black—out curtains. With a huff, Maddie turns, burying her head under the covers as well and closes her eyes, ready to spend at least half an hour to convince her brain to shut up and let her sleep.
Just as she starts to feel her body getting heavier, a buzz comes from her phone. Annoyance presents itself at the back of her throat as she reaches her arm out behind her in an awkward position to try and grab her phone so she can see what——or who——the hell is deciding to catch her attention. With no luck, Maddie flips over and rests the side of her head on her fist as she grabs her phone with her other hand. The screen light is too bright for her dark—suited eyes and she squints slightly to try and decipher the message. Out of habit, she reaches over to the edge of her bedside table and grabs her glasses.
my rip—off Yoda: Meet Outisde
11:02pm, Jan 9"What the— Why?" Maddie turns her phone off, throwing the covers off her before she quietly and slowly walks through her room to grab the hoodie hanging at the back of her door and ties the drawstrings on her sweatpants before she sneaks downstairs, wary of waking everyone else in the house. As far as she knows, everyone is asleep, and she doesn't want to risk finding out she's wrong. Her heart stops for a moment when she hears talking but then after listening in, realises is just the TV. But by process of elimination, that also means that her uncle is downstairs, either asleep on the sofa or awake and watching. . . Keeping up with the Kardashians? Yeah, he's definitely asleep. Mark would not be caught dead around that.
Nevertheless, Maddie is just as careful once she reaches the bottom of the stairs, trying to be as quiet as a mouse as she quickly slips her shoes on, deciding there's no point to do up her laces. She winces as she unzips her bag pocket, trying to reach for her keys to unlock the door. When she feels the cold metal, her hand slowly clamps around it before pulling it out.
