THE car idles to a stop in a parking space almost directly in front of the main entrance of the school. Maddie recognises the spot a few spaces down. It was where they parked the jeep the night Peter attacked them in the very building she spends seven hours a day in. She probably wouldn't have noticed if Harry had parked there, not until the end of the day and that would be the only thing in her mind the rest of the day. Now she's got an extra nightmare to add to the school, because nothing screams best years of your life like being chased through those corridors for the second time around.
Maddie goes to open the door, fingers reaching for the handle, when the lock clicks. She pulls at the handle before looking over to her cousin. "Harry, did you just lock the door?" She's answered with silence as he stares to the double doors of the building. "Harry, the door, please?"
"Tell me what the hell is going on."
He looks over to her, Maddie furrowing her brows as she turns to look at him, hand falling to her lap. "What?"
"You know what," he says sternly. "You know a lot more than you're letting on. You know whatever the hell it was that attacked me a month ago. You know."
"Harry, I don't know what you're talking about." The lie falls easily off her tongue but weighs heavy on her conscience. She wants nothing more to blurt out everything, what bit him, that it's a miracle he's alive and not howling at the full moon every month. More than anything, she wants to tell him so that she can confide in how terrifying these last few months have been.
But she can't. She can't do that to him. Bring him into this world, force him to accept the world is not what it seems, that his cousin or her best friend are something supernatural.
"You're doing your tell," he replies. Maddie never knew she had a tell, she thought she could hide lies quite well. "Your face goes blank when you lie. So you don't give anything away."
Ah. Well, now she's gotta watch out for that.
"Harrison, let me out."
Harry's balled fist goes to his mouth, his jaw tenses and Maddie wants out. She's not scared of him. No matter how angry, he could never hurt anything. She's also found more things to be afraid of than getting her family angry.
"Tell me why you think making me feel like I'm going crazy is a better idea than telling me what's going on?!"
He slams his hands down on the steering wheel, the loud sound making Maddie jump slightly in surprise. The radio flickers on, glitching through channels. It garners Maddie's attention, getting her to look over to Harry in confusion. Did he cause that?
She knows better than to assume coincidence. Is there something going on with him? Did the bite actually do something?
Harry sighs, reaching to the dial and turning the radio off. The cousins find themselves at an impasse, neither one relenting from their position. Maddie refuses to tell him anything and Harry refuses to let it go.
A couple taps on the car window startle Maddie, having her break eye contact with a small flinch. She looks over to see Scott. He wears his comforting smile, though it's laced with concern. "Everything okay?"
