( second chance at first line; pt.i )
WHEN her mom arrives home in the late—afternoon on a Saturday, Maddie is tucked into the corner of the sofa, a blanket covering her legs as she boredly plays 2048 on her phone. She'd gotten a text about an hour ago that said she was forty minutes away, but considering the fact that mothers don't tend to get their times right, Maddie's not surprised that she hasn't arrived at the time she said she was. Although, it didn't exactly bode well with her anxiety and intrusive thoughts making her think about all the possible reasons that she could have been late, none of them including traffic or a miscalculation of time.
The sound of the door opening grabs her attention and she turns her phone off, throwing the blanket off her before she walks over to the entrance, narrowly avoiding her running brother who skids past her with a sorry into the kitchen. Lillian carefully dodges her nephew as she leaves the kitchen, exchanging a look of amusement with Maddie who shrugs in response. Maddie's attention is then taken by her mom entering through the door. The instant her eyes fall onto her daughter, she gives a bright smile and opens her arms.
Maddie rolls her eyes playfully as she walks over to her mom, walking into her arms. Sarah squeezes tight, placing a kiss on the side of her head. She may have played off the relief she felt to the others, but there was no way she could ignore the way her heart was drowning in it upon seeing her mother in that doorway or being in her arms.
Her family's back together again.
An hour later, the six family members are sitting around the table, trading laughs and conversations over dinner. Mark gets Connor started on some space thing that Maddie decides not to try to wrap her head around for her own peace of mind. Sarah and Lillian are engrossed in a conversation about a new litter that came into the shelter——Maddie's ears perk at the mention, her attention diverting fully to hear more about it. Lillian's hazel eyes glance over to Maddie before she turns her head towards her, silently inviting her to join the conversation.
"How cute are they?" is the first question she asks. She pauses, tutting at herself. "What are you talking about? Every kitten's cute." She gives a small shake of her head before looking back at her aunt. "What breed are they?"
Sarah chuckles at her daughter's enthusiasm as she takes a sip of her wine, her sister—in—law giving an upwards tug of her lips before she answers, "They're tabby cats."
Maddie awes. "Can I see them?"
"I'm heading there tomorrow to make sure they're healthy. You can tag along if you want?"
The conversation is cut short——not before Maddie gleefully nods her head at the invitation——when a pitchy beeping sound comes from the kitchen. Sarah looks over, placing her glass down to stand but Lillian places her hand on her arm. "I'll get it, stay here."
The sisters exchange a smile as Sarah sits back down and Lillian heads into the kitchen. Sarah looks around the table, listening to the boys now locked in a conversation about lacrosse. After she hears Harrison mention Scott making first line, she looks over to her daughter who's currently chewing on a piece of pasta. "Scott made first line?"
