ERASER shavings are brushed to the floor as Maddie sits on the sofa, legs crossed with a notepad balanced on her leg. The pages are filled with random doodles she's been drawing for the past ten minutes since she ended a call with her mom. She was supposed to be coming back this morning but her flight kept getting delayed before it was eventually cancelled. Sarah had been keeping her daughter updated and she called her to tell her that she was waiting to board the plane back home.
Maddie glances up, eyes on her brother as he sits at the table, his cheek propped up by his fist as he looks down at his homework, pencil tapping against the edge of the table. Her teeth bite her bottom lip as she tries to hide her smile, watching his friend try to discreetly copy off him.
Jack and Connor have been friends since Connor moved up a grade two years ago. To help him grow more accustomed to the new class, the middle school principal put Jack and Connor together, the two of them growing to be quick friends, bonding like brothers and creating another addition to the family. Maddie has always had more non—blooded family than she does blooded family but that comes with the territory of being adopted. She doesn't even know how much biological family she has, all she knows is that she definitely has biological parents. . . for the obvious reasons.
Currently, Maddie is babysitting the both of them until Jack's mom gets back. It's part of the terms of her grounding, which she wouldn't mind. If she was being paid.
Just then, Maddie's phone lights up with a text. She grabs her phone, reading the message from her mom that she's now on the plane and types back a reply, wishing her mom a safe flight.
When Maddie leaves the app, she gives a small smile at her home screen: a photo of her, Stiles and Scott, taken on the first day of freshman year. Each of their parents have the photo framed in their house somewhere, celebrating a so—called important milestone in their children's lives.
The boys haven't changed much since then, they're a little taller and Scott's hair is longer now while Stiles has his buzzcut. If comparing a picture of then and now, Maddie is the one who's changed the most. Her hair had been a lighter brown back then as well as it nearly reaching her elbows —— most days she wore it in a ponytail or French braids. Looking at the picture, she scoffs in amusement at how innocent the three were back then.
They were celebrating a new beginning, a time for possible greatness. The next thing they knew, Maddie had been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, Stiles' dreams of being first line were benched ( literally ) and Scott continued to suffer from asthma attacks.
Maddie shakes her head, there's not much she can do to change the past and things are somewhat starting to look up, Scott no longer has asthma and both him and Stiles are first line —— even if Stiles' is probationary until the pink eye epidemic passes.
Thankfully, she's rescued by the Batman theme tune before she can let her mind fall into any more rabbit holes. She grabs her phone from beside her instantly silencing the ringtone by answering the phone and placing the device to her ear.
