The rest of summer flew by fast and soon school started which went by even faster. I had a great cross country season. The best I've had so far. For winter break Alan and I went to my aunt's beach house. Spring came fast and soon it was track season. My track season was good and Alan had a great baseball season as well. 3 weeks into summer break my grandmother called and asked me if I could stay with her for awhile. 4 days later I flew out to see her on a one way ticket. My original thought was I would stay a month or so, but I ended up staying with her all summer and most of the school year. She lived in a small lakeside cabin in West Virginia. It was rather peaceful there. I had been there about 2 months when she finally told me she asked if I could stay longer because she had cancer and couldn’t take care of herself anymore.
We talked about everything under the sun. She told me all sorts of stories about when she was my age. In return I told her about my brother, the sandlot boys, Benny, and even my mother. My grandma was the only person I felt comfortable talking to about my mom after all it was her daughter. My grandmother always had a routine. Monday she would go shopping. Tuesday she would do all the cleaning. Wednesday she would volunteer at a soup kitchen in the morning. Then an animal shelter in the afternoon. Thursday she would go to the library and have her doctor's appointments. Friday she would sleep in and bake in the afternoon. Saturday she would take whatever she baked and bring it to the homeless shelter. Sunday she would sit on her porch and read all day. This was her routine that she followed every week. Every week except for the 2 weeks a year she would go and travel to North Carolina to be by the ocean. I would always call Benny and Alan on those Friday mornings my grandmother slept in. I had never benn this close with my grandmother. She loved Katherine and it was always Katherine my grandmother would ask for. It felt so strange to be with her and not have Katherine around.
One morning as I was getting up to make my grandma breakfast I heard her call for me.
“Y/N. Come here for a second please,” she beckoned. As I walked into my grandmother's room I noticed something was off. Her usual bright smile was gone and in return it replaced with a sad frown.
“Grandma. Are you feeling alright?” I question rather nervously.
“Honey, my time has come. I never wanted you to worry about me. I never did. The reason I called your mom and told her I would need someone to take care of me was because I wanted to apologize. I knew she wouldn’t come out so I hoped it would be you that came. I know I should have apologized a long time ago. Better late than never I guess,” she says slowly, “your mother, my daughter was my greatest failure. She was always getting into trouble and I never did anything about it. I always thought it was just how kids were but when she lost her sister she only got worse. I tried to bend her back into shape but it never worked. When she got pregnant with Katherine your father insisted they get married. At first the marriage was alright but after she had you and your brother she got bored. She started sleeping around and your father didn’t like that. When they got the divorcee he did everything in his power to get custody of the 3 of you. Technically he has full custody if you as your mother only wanted 2 children. A boy and a girl. Your father was in court for 5 years trying to get custody of Alan and Katherine. After 5 years your mother drove your father insane. She manipulated him to believe everything that had happened was his fault. One day he couldn't take it anymore and he disappeared off the face of the earth. To this day I still feel bad for not intervening. I know my apology won’t do you justice but I needed you to know why she is the way she is.”
“Thank you grandma. I love you.”
“I love you too honey.” Those were the last words she ever said to me. Her funeral took place at her cabin and it was a beautiful service. I watched as my grandmother got laid to rest. I never knew how many people my grandmother influenced until her funeral. There were over 700 people at the funeral.
