On the first day of summer we all throw a big party. Wendy, all the Sandlot boys, and I all go to the sandlot. Everyone hangs out there until it's dark. Slowly everybody has left except Wendy, Squints, Benny and me.

"Wanna go to the dinner?" Wendy asks.

"Sure," I responded, grabbing Benny's hand and pulling him along with me. The four of us walk to the diner and sit in a booth. Benny and I on one side while Squints and Wendy sit on the other. The four of us order a basket of fries and 2 milkshakes. Wendy and Squints leave as soon as they finish their milkshake. Their excuse being something about how they have to be home by 10 but we all know it's a lie. Benny pays for our food and we slowly walk out of the dinner hand in hand. After about 5 minutes of walking I finally decide to tell Benny something I have been waiting almost a year to say.

"Hey Benny.”

“Yeah.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too,” he whispers before kissing me. This kiss is different from any other kiss I've had. It's full of love and passion. His lips move in sync with mine slow but fast at the same time. I pull away to breath for a second before he kisses me one more time but a lot shorter than the last time.

"Benny," I whisper, brushing my thumb against his hand, “I’m glad I decided to meet you on the roof that day.”

"I’m glad you did too. Although I never thought I would get the world's greatest girlfriend out of it. Had I known that I woulda asked you ages ago," he boasts leading me to his house, "you care if we stay at my house tonight? My mom works nights so you don't have to worry about her."

"I don't care where I stay as long as I'm with you," I respond. We continue to walk to his house, the stars shining bright above us. As we walk through his front door I realize how lonely his life must be. His mom works, his dad passed away years ago, and his brother is at college. He leads me to his room where he sits on his bed pulling me next to him. I lay my head on his shoulder and he lays his head on top of mine. We stay like that for a while, happy to be in each other's presence. After a while I heard faint snoring and looked to see Benny had fallen asleep. I wiggle out of his grip and lay him down on his bed so he can sleep properly. I lay down next to him and stare at the ceiling with lots on my mind. Emancipation being one of them. I can't leave Benny. I'm not gonna leave my brother either. I can't, he's all I have left. I fall asleep with everything on my mind.
