It was mid-April when I came back to the Golden state. Being back in California was strange after being gone for almost a year. As I walk in the door I take a deep breath in not knowing what to expect. It's quite in the house and I let my breath out. What was I expecting a welcome party back? Mother doesn’t give a shit about me and Alan is still in school. I say to myself as I run up the stairs to my room. It hasn’t changed a bit I realize as I set my bag down on my bed. After unpacking and starting laundry the phone rings.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Hey it’s Alan. I wanted you to know that there is a camp out tonight so I'm gonna be gone and mom has a date. I know you got back but you are on your own tonight. Love you and we will talk later bye.” He spouted out before he had to go.

I start to unpack my bag and do my laundry. After I finish my laundry I decide to go and visit my sister. I grab my wallet and start my walk to the cemetery. I get to the cemetery and sit down by her grave.

“Hey Kath. I miss you. I miss you so much. It has been over 2 years since the accident. I have been at grandma’s the past year. I better you two are reading books and listening to Johnny Cash. Alan and I get along better. We don’t fight all the time anymore. Honestly we don't fight at all. I guess that’s one good thing that came out of everything. Ooh I finally tracked down Dad. He and I got lunch the other day. It was awkward to be honest since I haven’t seen him in almost 8 years. Well the only other person to talk about is mom I guess. She didn't call me once when I was gone. We don't get along very well anymore. She changed big time after your death. It took her about 4 months to absorb everything. Once she did she started cutting me out. I think she blames me for your death.  She never liked me anyways so I guess it was just time she snapped. You were always the golden child. I miss you Kath. I love you so much.” I tell her about what’s happened while I’ve been gone. I get up and decide to see if Wendy is home. I walk to her house and knock on the door.

“Oh Y/N hey it’s been awhile,” Squints greets.

“Hey Squints. What are you doing here?” I ask.

“Oh well you see um Wendy and I are dating now,” He answers.

“Squints honey who is it?” Wendy yells coming down the stairs.

“Hey,” I exclaim as I see Wendy coming down standing next to her boyfriend.

“Oh my gosh y/n! It’s been too long!” she tells me as she gives me a big hug.

“It has been too long!” I agree with her.

“Well I got to head out. The boys are having a camp out tonight so I gotta go there. Bye y/nn,” Squints chides as he gives Wendy a kiss on cheek, “Bye Wen.”

“Bye hon,” she chirps as he leaves. We walk up to her room. She has painted the walls light blue and rearranged it a bit.

“So how are you?” she asks.

“I’ve been fine and dandy, you know. How about you? When did you and Squints happen?”

“I’m alright. I only got a month left of school for the year so that’s nice and we’ve been dating a few months now. He asked me to the winter formal and we’ve been dating ever since.”

“Wow who would’ve thought you two would get together?”

“I know it's crazy. Now we can go on double dates” Wendy exclaims.

“Yeah we can. Although I should probably see Benny first before we go on planning dates.” I respond sheepishly.

“You mean you haven’t seen him yet?” Wendy rolls her eyes at me.

“I came to your house straight from visiting Kath and my flight landed at 1 this afternoon.”

“I miss Katherine. She was always a light to be around.”

“That she was.”

“You wanna stay over here tonight and catch up?”

“Yeah. I would love to. I would’ve been home alone anyways tonight.”

“So how was West Virginia?”

“It was fantastic. I was homeschooled so I finished everything up before I left. So now I’m on summer break baby!” I smile while throwing my arms in the air.

“Lucky. School is killing me.” Wendy sighs.

“Well you only have a month left right Wen?”

“Yeah only a month then we got summer break y/nn!”

“Heck yeah! Party all night and sleep all day!” I exclaim loudly.

“Only you would say that y/nn. Only you.” Wendy laughs as she bumps my shoulder.

“Well we can both drive now right? So why not?”

“I never said we couldn’t but what about going to the pool and watching movies. Also I don't have my license quite yet”

“Well we can go to the pool too.”

“What do you want to do?”

“I don’t care. I’m still used to West Virginia time so I’ll probably fall asleep soon.”

“I mean it's what? 10 o’clock for you?”

“Something like that.”

“You can go to sleep if you want. I’m gonna be doing my homework since I actually have school.”

“Okay cool beans. Night Wen.”

“Night y/nn.” she replies back. As I fall asleep I think of Benny. It's been almost a year since the last time we saw each other. God I really miss him.
