I wake up the next morning to the phone ringing. I remove Benny's arm from around my bare back. I stir in bed careful to not wake Benny up. I put some clothes on and run down to answer the phone.
“Hello,” I yawn out.
“Hey y/n it’s Paul.”
“Oh hey Paul what’s up?”
“I have some bad news and some better news.”
“What’s the better news?”
“Well your father he’s a hero.”
“And the bad?”
“He’s um...he’s gone y/n. Some dude pulled a gun at a group of kids. He saved them by giving up his own life. I’m so sorry y/n.” I drop the phone unable to speak. Tears stream down my face as I start to sob. I curl up in a ball and soon my brother comes down and grabs the phone. After a few minutes my brother comes and wraps his arms around me. Benny walks down stairs confused at what's happening. I run up to my room and slam the door shut. I press my back against it and sob against my knees. Both Benny and Alan come up and try to coax me back out. They give up after a few hours. Every few hours my brother comes and knocks at my door. When I don’t respond he tries to open it but never can since it’s locked. When he sees he can’t open it he’ll sit with his back against my door talking to me. Even though I never respond back he still talks to me. He tells me about his day and how the boys are. I end up not leaving my room until the funeral 4 days later. The service is beautiful. It’s held outside on a warm summer day. It’s a small funeral as my father wouldn’t have wanted many people there. His grave is next to Kath’s. As I look at Kath’s headstone I notice something. Katherine died on my fathers birthday and my father died on Katherine’s birthday. I sit by their graves until it’s dark. It takes my aunt, Alan, Benny, and my step-mother to convince me to go home. Benny drives me home and carries me up to my room. I take my dress off and change into one of my fathers shirts Kay gave me. As I lay in bed I wonder. Who's next?
It takes a week for me to get semi-back to normal. I spend most of the week in my room or at the cemetery. I wake up a week after the funeral feeling different than normal.
"Good morning beautiful," Benny’s groggy morning voice calls out.
"Hey handsome." I grin.
"What do you have planned for today?"
"Well I have lunch with my step-mom but other than that nothing really."
"What about the rest of this week?"
Nothing that I can think of. Why what do you have planned?"
"Well I thought I would take you on a vacation."
"You don’t have to."
“But you and I both know you need one y/nn.”
“Whatever.”
"You should go get ready, it's almost 11," he says.
"Yeah I should get ready. I should shower today." I inform him.
"Then go shower." he laughs.
"Aren't you gonna join me?"
"Oh you bet I am," Benny quips. We both shower and get dressed. I do my makeup then pull Benny's jersey over my tank top. I grab the emancipation paperwork and run down stairs thankful that my brother is ready.
"Let's go," I giggle, grabbing my keys while heading out the door.
"Finally," my brother gripes. We walk to my car and get in.
"I told Benny to let the guys know you won't be at the sandlot today."
"Okay thanks y/n."
"You ready?"
"Yeah I think so."
"Good cause I see our step-mother waiting for us." I point at our step-mother waving at us. The lunch goes off without a hitch. It's almost time for us to leave when I pull out the paperwork.
"Hey Kay,"I quake.
"Yes honey," she responds.
"Alan and I have something we were wondering if you could sign," I stammer. I slid the paperwork over to her. Her eyes scan it before she takes a pen out and signs it without a question.
“I love you guys even if I’m not your real mother. I love you like my own. If you ever need anything I’m a phone call away." This was the closest to tears I have ever seen her other than at the funeral.
"I love you too," both Alan and I responded. After lunch we file the paperwork. As we turn it in a judge lets us know our mother will get a form she has to fill out before it will become official. She also said that since my mother is no longer my legal guardian I am already my own legal guardian. Of course that is only after my father passed away. Both my brother and I gulp at that as we walk out of the room knowing our mother won’t sign it. I drop Alan off at the sandlot before heading back home. Once I get home I see a note telling me to pack something for the trip Benny is taking me on. I pack my stuff for the trip and before I know it the boys are home. We make supper and watch a movie before heading to bed. We let my brother know we're gonna be gone for the rest of the week.
"Yeah yeah have fun and you better not make me an uncle," is all he grumbles out before going to his room. Benny and I go to my room and go to bed shortly after.
