I wake up around 11 the next morning and do my laundry. By the time I’m done with laundry it's after 2 so I decide to go to the library and get another book. As I am on my way to the library I see my brother and the other sandlot boys gathered around in a circle. What the heck I say to myself as I pass them. I get to the library and get a new book to read. I walk to my sister's grave and read to her for a while. The book I checked out was one of my sisters favorites. I get about a third of the way finished with the book before I decide to head home. As soon as I get home I go to my room and continue to read my book. I see why my sister adored it. I keep reading it until I hear something hit my window. What the hell? I say as I close my book and go to check who is at my window.
“What the hell Benny!” I screech as I see the brunette boy look at me.
“Look we need your help,” he exclaims very out of breath.
“Did you run here?”
“That’s beside the point.”
“What is the point?”
“Look, the point is we need your help. Yeah-yeah well he um.”
“What did you do to my brother”
“I didn’t do anything, he's fine. At least he will be if you come with me.”
“Ugh fine. Okay catch,” I tell him as I jump out my window. He somehow catches me and sets me down. Benny grabs my hand and drags me to the sandlot when my brother is laying on the ground unconscious.
“See I told you he was fine,” Benny griped.
“He is unconscious Benny! How is that fine!” I screech at him.
“Well he’s not dead,” Squints comments.
“If you guys got me to tell me my brother was dead I would kill you all,” I barked.
“Moving on from this topic I gotta go home,” Smalls squeaked. A range of different versions of me too came from the boys and soon it was only Benny and me left.
“I’ll carry him home and you open the door,” Benny suggests.
“Whatever,” I roll my eyes.
The rest of the walk is rather quiet. We are about to turn down my street when Benny stops.
“Why do you hate me?” he questions so quietly I don't know how I could hear him.
“Why do you think I hate you?”
“Well for starters you always avoid me, also whenever I talk to you I get shut out. I don’t get it y/n. What did I do?” The look on his face quite almost breaks my heart.
“Benny I don’t hate you. The reason I try to avoid you is because to be honest I’m scared. I’m scared that once I let you in you’ll leave. You’ll realize my life isn’t perfect and disappear. Either that or my asshole of a mother will make you leave the same way she made my dad. Every friend I have ever had either left or been driven away except for Wendy. I don't know if I could. No scratch that I know I couldn’t handle you or anyone else leaving me. The last time I lost someone who I was close with was my sister. She died, Benny. What if something that bad happens to you?” I sigh, “well this is my window. I’ll let you in and you should head home soon it’s getting late.”
“Okay. But meet me on your roof. Tonight 11:30 please.” I climb up to my window then let him in. He carries Alan to his room and sets him on his bed.
“I’ll see you tonight,” I whisper to Benny as he leaves. I walk back to my brothers room and see him sitting up on his bed.
“You know Benny’s a good guy. He ain’t gonna leave you y/nn and I won’t let mom drive him away,” Yeah-yeah informs me.
“You mean to tell me you were up the whole time!”
“Well you two were finally talkin. Didn’t want to interrupt that.” he smirks.
“You are so Alan annoying you know that?” I roll my eyes.
“Yeah yeah I know.”
“So you want to tell me why you were unconscious in the first place?”
“Oh um...well Benny busted a ball's guts and smalls said he had a ball at home. So he got it and hit the ball over the fence. He then told us Babe Ruth signed it so we were trying to get it back. The boys tried probably 10 different things to get the ball. One of those included using the catching gear to hoist me over the fence and grab it.”
“Only you boys are that dumb.”
“Supper!” our mother yells. We both go down and sit down for supper. After supper I go back to my room and read until it’s time to go meet Benny. I climb up to the roof and see him on the roof.
“Hey y/n,” Benny greets.
“Hey Benny,” I greet sitting down next to him.
“So you wanna know why I asked you to come here?” Benny questions.
“Naw. I only wanna look at the stars right now.”
“Well I want you to know I’m not gonna leave you. Not now not ever.”
“How do you know that? How do you know you won’t leave?”
“ Y/nn I’m here for you okay? It’s gonna take a lot more than your crazy mother to drive me away.”
“Okay Benny but for tonight can we look at the stars?”
“Anything you want.” For the next hour we looked at the stars. Then Benny left, leaving me alone with my thoughts. Almost every night was similar. Benny would meet me on the roof at 11:30 and we would sit up there for an hour or so. Sometimes we would talk, others we would sit in silence looking at the stars. Although there was more than one ocation we would fall asleep on the roof. We were both happy to be with each other and take a step back from reality.
