The moment I escaped the train, I scanned the platform for my friends. We'd arrived late to Platform 9 ¾ so I hadn't had a chance to find them so my heart skipped a beat when I spotted them. They noticed me at the same time and began to push through the crowds of impatient students toward me.
When we reached each other we fell into a hug. The end of last year had been so chaotic we hadn't had a chance to properly say goodbye but the summer had made us all miss our little group. Each of us had friends outside of our house but we spent almost every minute of every day with each other so, after four years, they were basically my sisters.
When we finally pulled back, I swear Danielle was crying. She'd donned a Hufflepuff bow in the back of her wilds blond hair. Over the summer she'd clearly had it trimmed but it had quickly grown wild again. Kelly's thin dark hair was curled for once and it was definitely much shorter.
"How was your summer, Gina?" Danielle exclaimed. "Kelly and I have been talking non-stop for the whole train journey. Did you know that over the holiday she's been rendezvousing with Becki? My summer's been nothing compared to either of yours, I'm sure. I mean you two are the only ones who even wrote me letters. Well, that's a lie because I wrote to Jacob, Becki and your brother and they all responded but I think they were just being polite."
"Danny!" I laughed, breaking her ramble. The corners of her lips tugged upward as she looked apologetically toward me. "My summer was pretty good thanks. Harry stayed with us for a while as normal and I exchanged some letters with Draco but that's about it really." The two exchanged a look.
"What was that look for?" I asked them and when they brushed it off as though it were nothing, I asked again.
"Nothing, I promise," Kelly responded. "Look we'll talk to you about it after the Feast."
"You'll have to wait up for me then because I'm meeting Draco to catch up about summer."
"Again?" Kelly demanded. Her emerald eyes glared me down and sent a chill down my spine. "You always meet him after hours, and one of these days you'll end up getting caught and then what's going to happen?"
"Kelly relax, we've been meeting there for half a year now, I know what I'm doing. And if I get caught then oh no I guess I'll have to face consequences for my actions. Besides, I'm not a Gryffindor Kelly, I actually think about my decisions." The laugh that rose from our bodies eased some of the tension. Together we climbed onto a carriage and before long it trundled toward the castle.
