We made our way over to a table with some of Draco's Slytherin friends. I smiled politely to them and glanced quickly around. I breathed a sigh of relief when I spotted Jacob, Kelly and Becki at the table next to ours. Danielle was far across on the other side of the hall with a few Gryffindors but she seemed perfectly relaxed. That girl could make friends in Azkaban.
Draco pulled the chair out for me and I smirked at him as I sat down. It was strange to see the usually snarky boy be such a gentleman but I was certainly not complaining.
We were hushed by Dumbledore and before we knew it, the double doors swung open again, revealing the four champions and their dates. I could barely keep the grin off of my face. The excitement of the night was getting to me and making me feel as though I were walking on air.
At the sight of Harry and his date, I heard Draco scoff behind me. Without looking away from the champions on the dance floor, I swiftly kicked him under the table. He inhaled sharply and glared at me but he refrained from making any noises after that.
The couples began to glide across the dance floor. Well, I say that but three out of the four were gliding while Harry stumbled awkwardly along, dragging poor Pavarti with him. I glanced at Draco and he was concealing a snicker behind his hand. I glared at him and he held his hands up in mock surrender.
Eventually, the dance ended and others began to make their way toward the dance floor. To my complete and utter shock, Draco stood up slowly and offered me his hand. I raised my eyebrow at him in amusement and he rolled his eyes and sighed.
"You are my date aren't you?" He asked, exasperated.
"Well that's certainly no way to convince a woman to dance with you," I teased.
He rolled his eyes again. I swear one day they'll roll right out of his head. "Fine. Regina Weasley, may I have this dance?"
"There you go," I smiled. I took his hand and he guided me out of my chair and through the sea of people and toward the dance floor. Between my dress and the hundreds of students that seemed to be moving against us, that faired to be a more difficult task than it sounds. After much tutting from Draco and apologetic smiles from me, we made it to the floor where several other couples were swaying to the music. I noticed Seamus and Danielle grinning stupidly at each other and my heart leapt. If anyone deserved to be happy it was that girl.
Draco tugged on my hand, pulling me into him. His arm slipped around my waist and he smirked at me as I attempted to conceal a blush. I laid my hand on his shoulder and he began to guide me slowly around the floor, expertly guiding me around the other people and graciously ignoring when I stood on his feet.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you'd done this before, Malfoy."
"I thought we were on a first-name basis tonight," he replied. "I'm a Malfoy, Regina. It's kind of expected I'd know how to dance. Just be glad you decided to come with someone who can actually hold you up without stepping on your dress."
I pinched his shoulder. "Harry was raised by muggles, Draco you can't penalize him for not knowing how to dance." As I said it, I saw him wince as I stood on his foot again. "Or me for that matter. Sorry."
"Don't sweat it, Weasley. You look stunning; a little pain is worth it to dance with you." I prayed my makeup hid my blush.
The dance finished and by the look on Draco's face and the lack of feeling in my feet, we both decided there would be no more dancing for the night. We returned to our table which had been abandoned by his friends and stayed there almost all night.
About an hour into the evening, I noticed Hermione walking up to our table. She looked insanely uncomfortable near Draco but I guess she wanted to speak to me.
"Hey, Hermione you look great!" I hugged her as she pulled out the seat next to me.
"Thank you, you look amazing too."
"Christ, this is unbearable," Draco muttered and I elbowed him.
"So you're here with Viktor Krum? How did that happen?"
"It's a long story," she laughed. "And you're here with Malfoy. I bet there's a story there too but I don't really care enough to ask." She shot a pointed look at the blond sat beside me who scowled back.
"Yeah," I laughed awkwardly. "Ron isn't too mad about this whole thing, is he?" I looked at her and she immediately understood it wasn't Ron I was asking about.
"No, I really think he's fine. I mean no one else had asked you so of course, you were going to say yes. He'll get over it eventually, I promise." We chatted for a bit longer before she left to go back to her date.
Hours passed and apart from a few songs where I got up to dance with my friends, Draco and I stayed at the table, talking the whole time. As time drew on, he sighed deeply. "Want to go somewhere?" He asked.
I looked at him apprehensively. "Where?"
"Trust me," was all he said. Despite everything he'd done to me and my friends over the years, strangely I did.
"Okay. Let me just go say goodnight to my friends." He nodded and stood up to go wait at the doors. I made my way over to where Becki and Kelly were sat, huddled close together and Jacob was almost falling asleep. Danielle was making swans out of the napkins.
"Hey guys, I'm heading out now." They got up to hug me, exclaiming what a good night it had been. I smiled as I left them. I looked around for the last person I wanted to say goodnight to before eventually spotting them. Harry and Ron were sat at their table where they had spent their entire evening. Their dates had long ago given up and were dancing around on the dance floor.
They looked up as I approached. "I'm leaving now," I said. Ron grunted and glanced to where Draco was stood patiently.
"Going somewhere?" He asked.
"Is that any of your business?" I asked sharply and he merely sighed and leaned back in his seat. "Harry, can I have a word?" He nodded and placed his drink on the table before standing up and following me to a space just out of earshot of Ron who would undoubtedly be listening in.
"I just wanted to thank you, for the necklace. It was really sweet." My fingers gripped the cool metal of the locket as I looked up at him.
"It's fine. You look perfect tonight, Gina. Seeing you just... really made me kick myself for not asking you sooner." I looked up at him through my lashes and I felt my cheeks turn pink as he leaned forward. His lips were cool against my cheek and his hands gently grazed my hip. "Night, Gee. I hope you have a good night."
He walked away, leaving me breathing heavily in the corner of the hall. It took a moment but I gathered up my wits and plastered on a smile as though nothing had happened. I made my way over to Draco. He was staring at the wall but turned to face me when he heard the clacking of my heels against the floor. He grinned when he saw me.
"Shall we?" I took his hand.
