The desert sun was hot, but altogether, it unbothered the Captain. Slowly and steadily, the knot of fear in his abdomen began to build, becoming stronger and stronger the farther he got from the safety of the Harbor.

This was highly suspicious, the whole situation seemed surreal and strange. Y/N never did anything rash, her thought processes and actions were very methodically planned and executed, much like his own. She would never leave, at least not without a good reason, and she hardly ever expressed her emotions so vividly as she had done that morning. What was happening?

And more importantly, where was she?

Truthfully, Levi had no idea where Y/N was, he only had one single, solitary clue. The odds were against him, she was likely already gone from his life again. But he had to try. Thinking about the situation, he knew two things; one, logically, she had headed northwest, and so that was the path he would follow. And two, thinking only with his heart, he knew that he would find her, or he would die trying.

The day seemed to melt away as the stallion, faster than any horse Levi had ever ridden, practically flew over the dunes. The steed was largely disproportionate to himself, but Levi thanked fate that they had blessed him with such a fast mode of transportation, and in turn, increased his chances of finding Y/N. As more and more time passed, he thought more and more about her. What would he say to her? What would he do when he found her?

And the whole time he rode, the memories kept flooding back.

From the very first time he had met her, Levi had felt something for Y/N.

When he had joined the scouts, he had been angry, cutthroat, a weapon from his time in the streets. Kenny had abandoned him, his mother had passed away; the only thing he remembered feeling was inconsolable rage and loneliness. Erwin had taken him in, became his friend as soon as he had joined it seemed, but he never felt the same way about Erwin or Hange that he did Y/N.

She was amazing, despite always being in the background. She was there, but not really there. While he usually was tasked with going out into the unknown world, she was stuck behind the walls, dealing with the political side of things. It was probably because of her that the Scouts were able to get away with so much, she always cleared up their messes in the courts with her wits and a solid defense. Erwin told her he had put her in charge of those things because he thought she would be good at it, but Levi knew that was only half the reason. He knew Erwin like the back of his hand, and he knew that his friend's real motive was to keep Y/N safe. No matter how talented a warrior she was, Erwin was always looking out for her, ensuring that she would lead a full life.

Levi remembered coming home and getting to see her after weeks, months, and sometimes even years. How the whole group would spend their evenings in a tavern, catching up, comfortable in the presence of the others. It seemed like so long ago, but he remembered it like it was yesterday.

Y/N was a fighter; she had a strong will and strong instincts; he had witnessed her kill Titans and men without a second glance. But the thing he came to most adore about this person wasn't a physical trait; it wasn't her gifts, her looks, or her standing.

For as long as he could remember, anytime he was in a bind, was faced with a difficult decision, he would always seek out Y/N. She always listened to him, never pried for information, and never made him feel bad about himself in any way. Many saw Levi as unapproachable, a stoic man who only knew killing and anger. But not Y/N, not ever.

He remembered losing his squad to the Female Titan. He had arrived back in the walls, and the first thing he did was find her. She held him, stroking his head, as he cried into her chest.
