Sven walked into the living quarters of the Toppat orbital station, running a hand through his hair tiredly.
He'd just spent the last few hours sorting through a mountain of paperwork that had somehow been lost and now recovered. Most of it was mind-numbing and frankly irrelevant complaints, but it was necessary to get it done.
Unfortunately, as a high-ranking Toppat that wasn't a leader, the majority of paperwork found its way to Sven. The Right Hands and leaders were too important and busy to do things like the day-to-day management of the clan. That was where Sven came in, to fill in the gaps of management and organization.
Sven tossed his tophat onto the coffee table and sat on the couch, flipping through the channels on the TV.
After maybe like ten or so minutes of watching some mindless TV show, Sven looked up to see Burt walk in, looking even more exhausted than him- which was saying something.
For Burt, Head of Communications meant something more like Head of Doing Whatever Random Things No One Else Had Time or Motivation to Do-tions. As much work as Sven did, Burt did ten times more- and was ten times more sleep deprived.
Burt sat down next to Sven and rested his head on the younger Toppat's shoulder.
"How was work?" Sven asked softly.
"Mmm." Burt mumbled something incoherent. Poor guy was obviously exhausted.
"Yeah," Sven agreed. He started absently running a hand through Burt's hair. "Long day, huh?"
Burt nodded tiredly.
There was a silence, broken only by the quiet background noise of the TV.
"We should take some time off," Sven said finally. "It's technically required."
Toppat policy stated that for a certain number of hours worked, you had to take a certain about of time off. This was so no one got too overworked.
Shocker, Burt and Sven ignored that policy. Not completely, of course, but the days added up to way too much overtime.
Burt chuckled, then muttered something that sounded a lot like, "Hypocrite."
Sven and Burt would often try to convince each other to take a break, whilst simultaneously ignoring the other's advice to take time off. It had almost become a game between them, trying to see if they could get their partner to rest for a while.
"I mean, the amount of overtime we have, we could probably stop working for a year and still have legally required offtime," Sven continued softly.
"Mmm." Burt made a noncommittal sound in the back of his throat. Soon after, his breathing became slow and even, and he was obviously asleep.
Sven continued gently running a hand through his boyfriend's hair as he watched the TV tiredly.
After a little bit, he started drifting off, unable to resist the pull of sleep.
The last thing he remembered before falling asleep was thinking, We really should take a while off.
Maybe tomorrow.

If Sven and Burt are procrastinating taking a break, are they procrastinating or working? Hmm...
