Henry sat at his desk, resting his chin in his hand as he stared vacantly out the window. He sighed, tapping the desk with dissatisfaction.
It wasn't that his surroundings were unsatisfactory. In fact, quite to opposite. Not many people were able to enjoy the first-class view on the former Toppat orbital station- now known as the Stickmin Space Resort.
No, it wasn't anything wrong with the rocket. It was something wrong with him.
All his life, Henry had done reckless things. Stupid things, one might say. At age three he managed to climb up onto the house roof through the attic because he had seen an interesting bird. At age five he was nearly killed by running out into the middle of the road because he'd found a dollar coin- shiny things were kind of his thing. At age eight he tried hijacking a car because another kid dared him to.
Each of these heists might have killed him, but he'd always brushed that off. Life was supposed to be lived with a little risk.
And where had that mindset landed him? Running a space station, the owner of a multi-million dollar hotel/luxury resort.
But he was unsatisfied. Why? He had everything. A steady income, a wealth most could only envy, immunity from all of the factions and organizations he'd angered on Earth, including the Wall.
Henry knew why. If he was being completely honest with himself, he didn't care about a steady and solid life. He didn't even care about the money- it was a small side bonus to him.
At the end of the day, it was the thrill that motivated him. The adrenaline, the excitement of taking something from someone else, the challenge of doing something impossible.
What he also enjoyed was the satisfaction of turning back around and showing everyone what he'd done. Call him conceited, but what was the point of doing something amazing if no one ever saw it?
Lately, though, the satisfaction of stealing the rocket had worn off. It was high time for him to do something new.
With that in mind, Henry called up his two most trusted former Toppats, Burt Curtis and Sven Svensson.
Burt and Sven had been two of the last to convert from Toppats to workers, which showed deep-rooted loyalty. People who switched almost immediately from one faction to another could betray him just as easily as they'd betrayed their former leaders.
Anyway, they were both good at management and organization, which Henry kind of lacked at. They stepped in to fill in the gaps.
Henry stood up as the two former-Toppats walked in, quietly chatting. They were the only two who kept their top hats after reforming, which Henry found odd. But he let it go, because they couldn't try anything underhanded without killing themselves as well.
"Oh, hey, Boss, what's up?" Burt asked curiously as they both walked in.
Henry hesitated, wondering if doing this was really a smart decision. Then he realized that he'd only gotten this far by being stupid.
He decided to go right ahead. "I'm leaving."
Burt, characteristically, didn't show any emotion. Sven, on the other hand, started with surprise. "You are?" He asked. "Why?"
Henry shrugged. He realized he didn't really have a reason, but he was going to anyway. "I'm bored. I feel like it. Why else?"
"What are you doing?" Burt asked.
"Whatever I feel like," Henry said. "Maybe I'll take over a country. You know, to keep things fresh."
Burt and Sven glanced at each other, then Burt pulled out his phone looked at something. Then, startling Henry, the normally expressionless Toppat jumped in the air victoriously. "Three hundred sixty four! I win!"
Sven grumbled something under his breath, then pulled out a wallet- for some reason- and counted out a couple bills. With an annoyed expression, he handed them to Burt.
"What was that?" Henry asked, confused.
"We had a bet," Burt said, grinning as he put the money in his pocket.
Henry was taken aback. "You two had a bet on whether or not I would go down to Earth and do something stupid?"
"No, we had a bet on whether you would go down to Earth and do something stupid within a year," Burt corrected. "You doing something stupid was a given."
"Couldn't you have waited one more day?" Sven grumbled.
"Wait, tomorrow is going to be the one year anniversary?" Henry asked, realizing he'd had no idea that the occasion was coming up. And so quickly, too!
Burt and Sven both nodded.
"Why did no one tell me?"
Sven shrugged. "Maybe we would have if you hadn't spent the last few weeks holed up in your office pouting."
Henry nodded, accepting the rebuke. It was a fair assessment of what he'd been doing for the last couple weeks.
"Well, that's a nice time to go do something incredibly stupid and reckless," Henry decided. "I want you two to be in charge while I'm gone."
"This isn't our first time doing this, Hen," Burt said. "We've got this down to a science at this point."
Henry was confused. "But this is literally the first time I'm leaving since last year."
"Dad and pappa were very reckless leaders," Sven explained. "Not as bad as Terrence, but still pretty impulsive. We can take care of the rocket while you're gone, Henry. It'll be fine."
Henry nodded. "Alright then." He started to leave, but hesitated and looked back. "Uhm... Sven..."
Sven cocked his head. "Yes?"
"I wouldn't mind taking a small detour to check up on your parents..." Henry said. "If you want me to."
Henry smiled at Sven's look of absolute joy and gratitude. He knew how painful it could be not to know what was going on with family, especially when said family was in prison for leading an illegal thief organization. Even a little bit of information would help.
There were some days that Henry hated his decision to steal a rocket. It was so much work, and way too hard, and flat out frustrating.
But times like this balanced those out. Times when he could make someone else smile, times he could spread happiness through a simple action or word.
Times like this, he really loved it.
