One of the most horrific days recalled in recent American history is September 11th. Everyone looks back on that day with such heart ache and horror, keeping their loved one in their memories, hoping they didn't suffer.
Today was also the anniversary of Allison's uncles death. Her mother's baby brother was just 19 years old, working his second day as an intern at the World Trade Center when the terrorists hit. They hadn't moved to New York just then, but when we all saw it in the television, we knew. Along with thousands of others we stood there broken hearted and hopeful as the cameras captured the devastation knowing there was nothing you could do about it.
Business was slower than usual for Allison. After work as the sun started to set, she took a stroll down to the memorial and paid her respects. Her headphones stayed tight in her ears, her purse close to her body, and her eyes straight forward.
When she got to Ground Zero, she knew exactly where his name was. She found it when a school group came to New York just before her family had moved for business. She had even put a piece of paper over the name and lightly went over it with a pencil, taking in the carving.
Her fingers touched her uncles name perfectly. Marcus McKinnon. She smiled at the memory of them having tea and playing hide and seek. Though she was only 7, she remembers every detail. He took her to school her first year of kindergarten and a couple days in first grade. One of those days was the last time she ever saw him.
She took a deep breath and admired the beautiful lights and water falling from the sides. Then she looked around at the buildings, the people scattered among the streets, trying to imagine what it must have been like for everyone. Choking on dust and debris, running for their lives are rubble came down on them. Almost 3 miles that dust traveled.
"Well look who it is." The voice startled Allison. She blinked her teary eyes and turned to see Brian Quinn. "Hey, how are you? What are you doing here?" It was an obvious question. She wasn't the only one standing there at that memorial.
"I come down every year. I remember the moment it happened. That's why I became a fire fighter for about 10 years." Brian looked around at the beautiful memorial they created.
"That's incredible," Allison told him as she took her other headphone out of her ear. Her attention was full on Brian now. She had been rescued from a fire when she was 20 years old. "I came here because my uncle was never found, but was in the first building to be hit." That left Brian speechless. Of course he knew people that knew someone involved in the attack, but never someone who couldn't lay their loved one to rest.
"I'm sorry, Allison." He didn't really know what to say, but offered her his arm around her shoulder. She didn't want to like the warmth or the feeling she got from his touch, but she couldn't help it. "I was young but I remember." She sighed but without a beat looked up at Brian. He was significantly taller than her, today she wasn't wearing heels. "You have plans?"
