Kam

I walked into the guys locker room after football practice, muscles aching, skin sticky, prepared to peel off my jersey.

Throughout practice, a voice was screaming into my head, splitting my skull. The laughter that erupted in the hallway after I had ignored her, perforated holes into my conscience. I had looked back at her, only to see her staring off at the space in front of her, holding her chest. Part of me wanted to go back, to hold her, protect her like I used to...

Why do we go back to the things that hurt us?

"I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!"

I squeezed my eyes shut, tried to regulate my breathing. To block out everything that had to do with Asa Asa Asa.

"Don't say anything 'cause I don't believe you!"

So be it. Maybe it was better like this, maybe the pain would hurt a little less, sting a little less, burn a little less, as time went on.

I tried to sink into the present. The entire locker-room smelled like testosterone, sweat and deodorants. It was loud inside but when I stepped in, the noise seized.

"Yo! King Kam!" Someone whistled loudly and before I knew it, a round of applause fell on me, like pellets of stones.

"Heard they're considering you for prefect post."

"It'll make mad sense!"

"Remember me when you're up there."

I smiled tightly, did a little bro-hug with some of the guys, anxiety, itching my spine.

I need to get out of here

I need to get out of here

I need to get to mum.

"Una too dey hype this guy!" Somebody suddenly shouted. Zeke's scowling face came into view.

I rolled my eyes and straddled the bench, getting my clothes out of the bag.

"No dey feel yourself too much, Kam. They'll never elect you!"

Like I wanted the fucking post.

Zeke's problem with me started last year when I scored the winning goal against Cristan and got elected Team Captain. Back then, I didn't even know it was such a big deal to win against the enemy school.

He resorted to burning glares and harsh whispers, telling the others how he deserved to be team captain more than anyone else on the team. He had worked the hardest, climbing up the ladder, all the way from JSS1 and when he finally got the post, it got snatched away from him by the new comer, all because he supposedly broke the school curse.
