"We don't even ask for happiness.
Just a little less pain."
↳Charles Bukowski*
Asa"Just ungag me. I swear, I won't scream." I said... At least, I tried to say, as someone removed my blindfold.
I blinked rapidly, my eyes adjusting to the light as I took in the presence of the people I both recognized and didn't recognize.
Haliya was having a field day, laughing and laughing and nearly poking herself in the eye with her mascara.
She was reapplying her makeup for whatever reason.
"Let's release her." Detra pleaded at Jahseh who was looking out of the moving limo, deep in thoughts, he didn't even hear her.
Yes, moving limo.
These kidnappers had bundled and gagged me in the back seat of a limousine with windows so dark, I couldn't see out even if I tried.
Alistair and Zeke, Jahseh's friends/brothers/goons/fellow convicts were sharing yet another box of pizza from the mighty stack beside them and laughing at a meme like this was just some other fun day and they hadn't helped abduct and innocent person to God knows where.
We were seven in the car. Alistair and Zeke sat closest to the door of the limo, Jahseh, Haliya and Detra were on a seperate seat to my left and a little boy of 12 or 10 sat demurely opposite me, fingers clasped on his lap, quilt over his laps. He wouldn't look at anyone in the eyes and he had headphones over his head.
I found myself staring at the boy curiosly. He had dark brown skin, the same shade as Haliya's, and there was something about the way he carried his shoulders that was both regal and broken.
He didn't want to be here either.
"Jahsehhh!" Detra whined, kicking her legs. "Jemi would kill us if he knows what we're doing to her."
Jahseh snapped out of his deep thoughts and blinked at her. "To who?"
Detra motioned at me, "her! Asa, his best friend!"
"Who's going to tell him?"
I raised my hand.
"You're not going to tell him 'cause you won't even remember anything from today."
My eyes widened in panic at him and i started writhing in my seat, trying to topple over the two monsters that were Zeke and Alistair beside me, reaching for the door.
"Hey hey hey," Zeke pulled me back by the scruff of my neck like I was a disgruntled kitten.
My heart was pounding fast. I'd never spent time with Jahseh. He never allowed any outsider into his clique so whatever they were doing or about to do right now only smelled like trouble and I didn't want in.
I wanted to go back to Jemi, Kam and the rest. My safe haven.
Wherever these guys were taking me to, it could only be trouble and I didn't want to know, or stick around to find out.
Haliya was practically falling over Jahseh, laughing her ass off.
Detra chewed her lip worriedly. "At least, let's ungag her."
Jahseh sighed, leaned over, loosening the knot at the base of skull.
The moment the gag came loose, I started screaming; "help help!"
Zeke panicked and slapped my mouth shut, pressing down on my lips so hard, it nearly drew blood. "Shut up, before you get yourself killed."
Something about the frightened, hard edge to his voice made me nod furiously.
