Asa
Amir met me outside the bathhouse that housed three different standard Olympic sized swimming pool, where Detra was currently having swimming practice. I had to wait for her, seeing as she was my ride, back to the subway.
"Hey." He was suddenly beside me as I sat on the bleacher, trying to work out the questions in the booklet Mr Odein had given us.
His look was calm and serene, gazing at the tranquil pool where members of the swim team had gathered around to practice.
"Hi." I looked at him and smiled. His hair, dark, shiny and coily had grown almost an inch, falling over his face like inky waterfall, powerless against gravity.
He sighed, shook his head and looked at me, the startling silver in his eyes took me by surprise. Like he was angry with me. "You lost weight."
A hundred fists punched into my gut at his calm statement. I looked away and chewed my lip nervously. Drummed my fingers rapidly on my lap.
"When was the last time you had a decent meal, Asa?"
I pulled on the edges of my sweater. "A while ago." In all honesty, I couldn't remember. It was getting easier and easier to not eat... I mean, I took coffee this morning and threw up three minutes later. The side effects were worse. Headaches. Dizziness. Nausea. Fever...
"When, Asa?"
I squeezed my eyes shut and tasted the bitter lies on my tongue. "During break."
He was silent for a moment, then he stood up and gestured at me to rise with him. "Come."
"Where are we going?"
"I want you to eat something."
"T...that isn't necessary, Amir."
He looked at me, those glaringly grey eyes, stripping off my defences. "I want to."
He took me to a place I didn't know existed: Isle of the Lost. It was a calm, quaint place, warm and nice. A second hand bookstore, music store and cafe.
He got me creamy, overpriced coffee and croissants and we sat at one of the tables.
I inhaled the creamy coffee and my mouth watered. I was already stuffing my face with food when I looked up at Amir, only to find him watching me in that intense way he usually did, when he's trying to figure something out. Posture relaxed, fingers, tapping on the table, coffee untouched.
