Kam

I stepped out of the art studio, where I had locked myself in, dread knocking my heart over, rattling my ribs with impending doom.

I took a deep breath, closed the door to the room that had become my safe haven, exhaled. Since I couldn't concentrate in the cold, dark, Sanusi mansion, the room had been my academic escape. There was only one thing on my mind;

I need to get out of here.
I need to get out of here.
I need to get to mum.

I stopped in my tracks from securing the lock on the door, something else, catching my eyes.

I peered closely at the figure sprawled on the linoleum beside the door. My chest constricted painfully. Someone was tugging at my heart. I swallowed what I thought was air.

I was dreaming. I was sure I was dreaming.

Beside the door... Right there beside the door, sitting cross-legged on the recently waxed linoleum was Asa, leaning back heavily against the wall, head dropped, braids obstructing her face, eyes closed, fast asleep.

I dared to hope. I dared to hope that she was waiting for me.

How long has she been here?

She stirred in her sleep, shivered and murmured faintly, "Kam, Kam." And I had a heart attack.

I turned around, tried to walk away. I squeezed my eyes shut, dread and embarrassment, freezing the blood in my veins.

I turned around the corner, I can't see her. I can't look into her eyes after what I've done.

"Tell me... tell me you want this as much as I do." Haliya voice rang into my head tightening my guts into knots.

"I want this."

I stopped. Fisted my palms,  turned around and gravitated back to her.

I walked to her, slowly. Crouched in front of her and cringed at how she had deteriorated from the first time I saw her.

Her cheeks were sunken in, bags around her eyes, collarbone poking out... Like she hadn't eaten in days.

What is she doing to herself?

I touched her wrists, she was heating up like she was having a fever. "Asa-" I whispered, her name tasted foreign on my tongue. "Asa, wake up."

She struggled in her sleep, as if she was fighting against restraints. "No. No. Stop-"

I remembered the last time she had a nightmare, after spending the night with me. The horrifying, toe-curling scream that bursted out of her lungs.

I held her face in my hands, gently, rested my forehead against hers and whispered three words. "Asa. Wake up."

Her eyes flew open, her breathing laboured, then slowly... Slowly, she reached out to me, touched my face, held it between her hands, engulfing me in fire. I heated up at her touch, sank into her warmth.
