"Commander Erwin," The platinum-haired lady scout announced loudly at the door of my uncle's office, "It's Nanaba. We're here."
"Jorge, you're hurting me." I hissed lowly, my eyes staring onto the dark door before me as Erwin's heavy-set subordinate held my arm tightly down the hallway. The blonde soldier loosened his grip.
"I'm sorry, Miss Austerlitz. I have to. We've gone through enough trouble when you disappeared from the HQ." He said with a stern face, apologetic in his tone.
An urge to apologize chimed in my mind, but what was I apologizing for? It wasn't like I would get myself killed the moment I stepped out of this dull, empty place.
The door to the office opened, revealing a smug-looking Levi leaning against my uncle's desk, his arms folded against his chest. Erwin was organizing his desk, his suspended attention that he was exhausted of this goose chase. The two officers saluted respectfully towards their superiors, as I whisked my head away from further embarrassment.
I couldn't even look to my uncle's direction. One glance and I knew I had to retract back to the ground. So my agitated eyes alighted on the little imp he always had along with him, my vacant gaze turning into a searing glare every second I maintained his disparaging stare down my defeated presence.
"Good work, Jorge, Nanaba." Erwin uttered, looking blankly towards his officers. "You are dismissed."
"Sir." The two replied, saluting, and marching back down the hall. I breathed heavily where I stood, unable to face the two of them like that.
"At this point you are embarrassing me, Celestine." My uncle began, his firm voice resonating through the concrete walls of the office. "What did I do to make you do this all the time?"
"This." I answered underneath my breath, staring down onto the wooden floor.
"You broke your promise. How am I to trust you?"
"It's not like you would have any chance to prove I can be trusted." I replied, stealing glimpses at him. He sat there behind his desk, with Levi still standing next to it and watching this moment of his personal satisfaction- myself being scolded by my uncle- idly by.
"You keep cooping me inside, Uncle. How are you supposed to know I can be trusted outside?!" I looked at him, following his movements helplessly as he exited off the barricade of his desk. "It's not like I'll get shot the moment I step out of the door. What are you hiding me from? Why do I always have to stay in?"
"You know why you have to stay inside. Look what happened to you today." He growled lowly as he gestured out the window, glaring at me in all his classic restriction.
"What? What happened to me today?" I asked, of course pretending nothing happened at all.
"Do you know why they found you where you were?" Erwin asked. "That jewelry woman said a young lady passed by her store and the moment she got out, her necklace was snatched away. What if something worse happened to you, Celestine?!"
"Jewelry woman!" I exclaimed, jerking my head back, unable to believe they could choose such a store to inquire of my whereabouts. And in such a nick of time, too. I quickly became suspicious about it, my blazing eyes darting around the room for a suspect.
"Stop acting unwitting, child. I never raised you that way." Erwin told me. "Hand over the necklace."
"What? No!" I resisted, stepping back as he approached me. "It's mine! You cannot take that away from me, too!"
