It's been a few weeks since Larina's departure. You knew she wanted this; it was for the best, even if a bitterness in your head whispered doubts. Not seeing her sleeping on top of Nonoc or hearing her ramble about her adventurous past reminded you of how... Alone you are in this world. You're lost without her, literally and figuratively. You had no idea where Jamanaki village was on the map and you couldn't contact her as your little book taught you. Fingertips tapped, increasing their pressure on your jade mask. Perhaps those few pages were lying. Or you were lying to yourself.

A whinny broke through the emptiness.

"I miss her." Your fingers swept through Nonoc's snowy mane as he leaned into your touch. "You miss her too huh." You heaved a curse and stared at the bottom of the stairs. You were going to break into a sweat with how long they were. Didn't help that the days are getting hotter and the far away, desert sun's rays are beating on your back. "Might as well get it over with" -there was a snort and Nonoc grazed on the grass- "yeah, you can relax my grey, loyal companion." You pat the white streak on his head before tying the reins to the fence. In front of you was a large hill with an even larger building at the top. Climbing the stairs proved to be a chore and you wondered why they didn't build the tower below the hill. The closer you got, the better you were able to read the sign under the archway. 'Darkley's Boarding School? There has to be a village nearby.' Lazily, you made it up the last steps and laid against the inner side of the wall. You heard the roaring of an engine behind you and what sounded like a frightened neigh. 'It's too loud to be a "car" as they call it.'

As you peeked the side of the wall, you heard Nonoc let out a roar. 'Just when I was going to put away my mask.' You came face to face with a comically humongous vehicle that drove full throttle towards the stone wall you were behind. You dove away from the wall and hoped with all your heart that the lessons you read were right. Raising your hands, teal orbs, wisps, fluttered in front of you, converging, forming half a sphere that covered your entire front. It fucking worked! Chunks of bricks half the size of your torso are blocked, except for the dust you inhaled. Coughs racked your lungs, rasping your windpipe, and you hardly paid attention to the increase in chaos. Shock waves pelted the earth as the vehicle fired a shell at the wooden sign on the ground. Brainless chortles came from the car and people jumped out of in a flurry of white, blue, and red. The cannon aimed at you, and you knew, you better bring your arms up again. Another shell and it sizzled out your shield, blowing you back. Smoke rose and obscured everything unless it was a foot in front of you.

Three pairs of wine-red eyes glinted in the haze.

"What a try-hard." He wore all blue, except for the pieces of a metal sleeve clinging to his right arm. He lunged at you along with another one that wore all red; who snatched the hood off your head.

"And a looker."

"Creep."

"I'm not the real creep 'round here." The red ninja laughed at your weirded-out expression, even from under your jade mask. He took a step back. "It's the other dude, behind you." You whipped around with fists clenched tighter.

"Isn't that rude?" The blue one smirked and kicked under your shin, watching you fall to your back with a giggle.

"You kissed that girl." The white ninja yanked you to your feet, and you threw a punch at him, which he caught with ease. "Well, aren't you feisty?"

"And aren't you all annoying?" You prepare to strike him except he shoves you away unto an outstretched leg. Pain shots up your back when you hit the dirt floor. Throbbing aches traveled from the back of your skull to your neck, and you winced as you moved your head, your eyelids slide open, a shoe pressing on your shoulder.
