"What were you saying before Candy?" Brennen asks after he begins driving away.

I look at him out of the corner of my eye and can feel my stomach stir. There's no way I'm talking to him about all of it in front of Colby.

"Nevermind." I wave my hand. "It wasn't that important."

"Whatever you say is important." He says.

There's a small silence.

"Yeah Candy, whatever you say is important." A large hand is placed on my shoulder. I look back at Colby who's grinning at me.

He knows what I wanted to talk to Brennen about. He knew that if he came with, I wouldn't say anything. He knows that he might actually have me wrapped around his finger.

I grin mischievously back at him which causes his face to change.

"Ok fine. Yeah." I turn my body to face forward again. "I wanted to talk to you about the party."

"What about it?" Brennen asks, unsure of where this is going.

"Yeah what about it?" Colby pipes up.

"Is there an echo in here?" I squint my eyes and look around the car jokingly.

Brennen chuckles but Colby stays silent. Without even looking at him I can tell he's getting frustrated.

"Anyway, yeah, the party." I take a deep breath. "I'm sorry Brennen."

"For what?" He looks at me once we stop at a red light.

"For kissing you." I reply. "Twice."

I hear Colby scoff from the backseat.

"Shut it." I turn and point at him. He looks at me, surprised.

"Why are you sorry?" Brennen asks. "It was fun."

"It was." I sigh deeply. "I don't have the same feelings for you that you have for me."

Brennen stays silent, looking at me. Actually the whole car is silent and it's extremely awkward.

"Candy-" Brennen starts to say something but stops.

"Yeah?" I encourage him to continue.

"I like you. A lot." He says. "I thought we had something together. Some sort of connection? I thought that the kiss at Mulholland drive was special. I think you're hiding your feelings because you don't want to ruin what we have. It won't be ruined. I promise."

My stomach starts churning and I close my eyes. This is not how I wanted this to go.

I open my eyes when I feel his hand placed on mine.

"Light is green." Colby says quietly.

I roll my eyes and move my hand slowly from underneath Brennen's. He continues to drive again.

"Brennen I'm not hiding any feelings. I enjoy being your friend and that's as far as I want it to go." I reply. "I don't want to hurt your feelings because you are special to me, just not in the same way."

I'm watching Brennen and his face changes from looking disappointed, to angry.

"There's something between you and Colby isn't there?" He says sternly.

"Umm what?" I can feel the nerves in my stomach. "No there isn't."

"Don't lie." He says. "That's the only reason why this all would make sense. I see the way you guys are around each other. I can see the way you guys talk and look at one another."

"Are you kidding? There's no way in hell there's anything going on between Colby and I. He's manipulative, annoying & arrogant."

"Is that all? Fuck." Colby mumbles.

"I just don't want anything like a relationship. I thought I did with you but I'm rushing myself into something I don't need right now." I look back at Brennen and his expressions soften once again.

"Okay." Is all he says.

"Please forgive me."

He looks at me with a side smile. "I forgive you."

"Good." I take a deep breath. "Now, I'm hungry from all of that."

"Me too." Colby says. "Can we get In-N-Out?"

I glance at Brennen and he glances at me. We both smile at each other.

"Animal fries?" I ask quietly.

"Animal fries." He nods in response.
