The bond we share

11. The jealousy within

Leandra looks worried after Mitace finishes telling Naomi and David what had happened. David is the first to say something.

"If you are from up there you are wise ones. If that is the case then we had better make you some food to eat." he says, rising from his chair.

"No, please don't treat us differently. We are from above, but we do not want to be found by the wise ones. We just want to live just like you." Mitace says, trying to ease the tension.

Naomie and David look at each other, seeming to have a conversation with their eyes.

"David, will the backroom be good enough for them?" Naomi asks.

David sighs. "It would be perfect for the two of you. Naomi can show Leandra how to do her work and I can show you how to do mine. A hand might actually be what we need right now."

Naomi and Leandra exchange an excited look as Mitace and David shake hands. Over the next couple of days Leandra picks up the household chores quickly and excitedly. She tells Mitace all about the market Naomi took her to and how they bought new material for Naomi to make some new clothes for the two of them.

Naomi races out to the fields a few weeks later when she sees David. Naomi excitedly throws herself at David. He catches her just in time.

"Not that I'm complaining but what brought this on?" he asks, kissing her.

"We are going to have a baby!"

David lifts her into the air and crushes her to him. "I'm so happy!" he says, kissing her over and over again.

Mitace is confused. "Where is the baby?" he asks.

Naomi smiles as David wraps his arms around her from behind. "The baby is growing in my womb Mitace."

"I don't understand. I have heard of this before but when they speak of having a baby there is no baby."

"Mitace a baby is like a seedling. Once it starts to form inside of a woman, the baby grows like a flower. When it is ready the woman gives birth, bringing the baby into the world."

Later that night Mitace and Leandra ask more questions about babies and where they come from. Naomi and David answer all their questions, and many more they come up with.

Over the months to come Naomi grows larger. Leandra begins to take on more of Naomi's duties so Naomi can rest more. One day Leandra goes to the water's edge to gather some shells to make a mobile for Naomi's new baby, when a voice calls out to her. Abruptly she turns to find a handsome man with hair as gold as the sun and eyes as blue as the deepest ocean.

"Hello." Leandra says.

The man inclines his head. "Hello to you." he replies seductively. "You do realize that the shells are not permitted to leave the water's edge as the sea life need them." he says, calmly resting his elbows on a rock as he taunts her.
