RUBY MARTINEZ POV

NEXT DAY

I stormed up to Monse and slammed her locker shut. "What the hell is this I'm hearing about you hanging out with him?!"

"Who's him?"

"LATRELLE!"

Monse opened her locker and looked confused. "Who told you?"

"Jamal!"

"And who told him?"

"LATRELLE! NOW ANSWER!" I demanded harshly. I don't have time to play these games with her! I need to tell her that she's NOT hanging around Latrelle!

"We're not hanging out," she said and I let out a relieved breath. That was until she said, "He just comforted me in the stairwell."

My eyes slowly enlarged. "And may I ask why he's comforting you in the stairwell?"

"What is this, 21 questions?" Monse retorted.

I shook my head and grabbed her hands. I spoke gently now. "I'm just looking out for my best friend. You know that Latrelle isn't good company to keep."

She disagreed. "He's honestly not that bad, Ruby. He's actually really...compassionate." She chuckled to herself. "And he's one hell of a pep talker."

"WHY ARE YOU CHUCKLING?! THIS ISN'T A CHUCKLING MATTER!" I snapped out of nowhere. Even I'm a little bit shocked by my outburst.

Monse's staring at me warily and I sighed. "You don't get it, Monse! Jamal is losing his shit over this!"

"Because of Dwayne," she assumed.

"Exactly! Latrelle did something to Dwayne, and now you're befriending him? That's kinda shady."

She closed her locker for good and spoke bitterly. "Well maybe I wouldn't have confided in Latrelle if you and Jamal would've checked on me."

"What?"

Monse continued. "Latrelle was the only person who bothered to run after me to see how I was doing! Yet, you and Jamal are supposed to my bffs?" She crossed her arms over her chest. "So why didn't you guys care enough?"

"We did!" I exclaimed. "But there's a limit on how many students can leave the room at a time, Monse! You know that!"

"WHO CARES?!" she argued. "I THOUGHT WE ALWAYS PROMISED THAT FAMILY COMES FIRST?!"

"Yeah, but Ms. Kent doesn't play!"

She rolled her eyes before she stood by her decision. "Well listen, I'm thankful for Latrelle. He got me out of a rough spot. And I'm sorry that you guys don't like him, and I'm sorry about what he did to Dwayne, but you guys should ease up on him. He's not a bad dude."
