Chapter 9

The trio sat on the window seat.  Varian just gazing out the window as Cassandra tried to comfort Rapunzel.  A knock sounded on the door.

"Come in," Rapunzel mumbled.

"I believe somebody ordered room service?"  Eugene came in with a tray of cupcakes.

"Eugene, how did you know?"  Rapunzel grinned.

"Ah, I had a feeling. Look, I just wanted to clear some stuff up... I also had a feeling that you two would be present, so I brought extra."

"Thanks, Eugene," Varian offered a weak smile.

"No prob', Goggles," Eugene replied as he sat down next to his girlfriend.  Cassandra scooted over respectfully.

"I haven't had a chance to apologize for putting you on the spot with that proposal," Eugene admitted.

"Well looking back, storming out of the room probably wasn't the best reaction. So I’m … I'm sorry," Rapunzel answered.

"No, no don't apologize. Look I'll admit, I don't quite understand why you said "no." But I promise to do everything I can until I do," Eugene assured her.

"Thanks, Eugene," she smiled.

"In the meantime, we'll stay right here and take things slowly. I miss this," Eugene promised.

"Hey, promise me one more thing," Rapunzel pleaded.

"Anything."

"That you'll be patient with me," she whispered.

"Absolutely," Eugene nodded before they kissed each other on the lips.  "Good night, Rapunzel."

"Good night, Eugene," she said as he left.

The three siblings were left alone again.

R:Back to life after happily ever after
Stuck inside once again and we're gazing out

Rapunzel opened the window to let in a breaze.

V:True, we're in here with those we hold dear
Surrounded by their love

Varian hugged the pillow he was holding tightly.

C:And for some, that's more than enough
No doubt

The sibling looked at Rapunzel's empty journal as the wind caused the pages to turn.

C,R,V:But we got the wind in our hair and a fire within
'Cause there's something beginning
V:I got a mystery to solve and excitement to spare!
C,R,V:That beautiful breeze blowing through
R:I'm ready to follow it who knows where
C:And we'll get there, I swear
C,R,V:With the wind our hair!

It's your destiny.  Follow your destiny!  You can't run from it...

Varian gasped as he sat up in his bed.  He could hear the words from his dream echoing in his head.  He shook his head, wiping the sweat from his brow.  Getting himself out of the bed, he changed his clothes.  It was hard not to look at the alchemy items on his desk.  The temptation to continue the experiments he had been conducting on his powers was overwhelming.  Especially since he had been forbidden to continue three days prior.

The worse part was, Fredric didn't know he had touched the rocks himself, or that him and Cassandra had been present when Rapunzel touched the rocks as well.  He had no idea that Varian's powers were now reacting differently due to this, that action had to be taken.

Varian wasn't certain exactly of Fredric was exactly abusing his power as a king to forbid him from the experiment.  It wasn't done in an order of a father, but as a king.  It would be treason to disobey, which could quite possibly land him in a jail cell.  Or worse.

What made things even worse was that he couldn't even seek advice from Xavier.  He was forbidden to speak of the rocks to anyone.  Technically, he wasn't even supposed to be thinking about them, but no king could control another being's mind.  At least, not any normal king.

Then that's when the idea struck him.  He didn't have to talk to Xavier specifically about black rocks.  He could ask Xavier about 'legends' and learned what he could that way.  True, Varian felt bad because he felt like he was using his friend, but sometimes, when push comes to shove, drastic descions had to be made.  It wasn't like it would actually harm Xavier to tell Varian stories as far as Varian could tell.

Going behind the king's back seemed like a pretty stupid idea, but it wasn't like he was exactly disobeying.  Answers were needed before his powers got out of control and someone really did get hurt.  If only he was Fredric's true son, then maybe it wouldn't be so scary to be going behind his back.

It was hard as much as Varian wanted to deny it.  He had always been least favorite when it came to his mother.  She hated him. He knew that now.  Rapunzel was also her favorite, due to her healing, more's specifically, time reverse powers.  Now she was Fredric's favorite due to being his only biological child, which he understood as well.  However, Varian also pretended that he didn't notice that Cassandra had became his favorite adopted child.  Probably because she stayed clear away from him and didn't try to seek him out to become a parental figure as Varian had.

It wasn't that Varian was jealous.  It was just that, he thought he'd actually have a male figure to look up to.  He had Lance and Eugene, but they were more like older brothers more than anything.

Now, when it came to Arianna, she appeared to love all three of them equally. She left Cassandra to herself a little more because she was respecting Cassandra's personal space.  Rapunzel needed her help adjusting to becoming a princess, but she was helping Varian get over his fears and traumas just as much.

It was surprisingly easy for Varian to go out to go find Xavier.  He wasn't being followed by a fleet of guards.  Then again, Rapunzel wasn't with him, but it could also be the fact that Rapunzel had pleaded with Fredric not to be stuck in the middle of a battalion.  However, he still had Stan with him to make sure he didn't get lost.  Varian soon became grateful for that, due to the fact that he wasn't on the streets very often.  The last and only time he had thus far been alone on the street, a random man had pushed him for accidentally running into him.  Coincidentally, that was also the first time he met Xavier.  The man had stood up for him and helped put until the others found him.

As always, Xavier had a few tales to tell, but none of them gave Varian anymore information than he already had, so it was a fail.  At least he got to see Xavier though.  It wasn't like the trip had been for nothing.  They got to sit down with a cup of hot chocolate and just chat for a while, which made Varian feel much more at ease with his situation.
