Chapter Thirty-Two
I wake up in the car.
"Hey, sleepyhead," Austin smiles.
"I'm gonna have a brother!" Dylan giggles.
I look at Louis. He's clenching the steering wheel with both hands.
"Yeah," I force out with a small smile.
"What are you going to name it, Mommy?" Dylan asks.
"I don't know, honey," I say slowly.
"Lucas. Right?" Louis speaks suddenly.
"If it's a boy," Austin says.
I sit up and look out the window.
"Dylan, we're gonna stay at my house tonight, okay?" Austin smiles.
"Is mommy coming?" He asks.
"No, buddy. She'll be there tomorrow, okay?" Austin smiles as the car pulls into his driveway.
"Okay," Dylan says and looks at me.
"I'll see you tomorrow," I whisper and kiss his forehead.
He smiles and gets out of the car, waking inside with Austin.
Louis looks at me.
"Hi," I say quietly.
"Hi, Kay," he says softly.
I rub my head and frown.
"I'm sorry," I say.
"Stop saying that. You don't have to be." He smiles.
I nod slowly and look out the window.
Now he knows how Austin felt. And I'm in the middle of all of this. Sex with Austin was a mistake. It was a mistake. I need to stop playing his heart. I need to stop running to him for everything, or if I do, I need to do it and act as a friend. Nothing more. I need to just stop.
"He's really happy you know."
I almost jump at his voice.
"He is?" I ask.
He nods. "He says he's matured over the years and he's ready for a child."
I bite my lip. He's basically helped raise Dylan. Because Louis hasn't been there.
No. It wasn't his fault. He wanted to be there but he couldn't.
"It'll be okay. I won't get mad at Austin for spending time with you. Or at you for being with Austin." He smiles at me reassuringly.
"This scares me, Louis. I-I think the only reason I made it through the last time was because there was a chance it was your baby but. . .but this is Austin's. For sure. And I don't know why but it scares me."
He looks at me. "Why? He'll be a great dad."
"I don't want to be with him. And I think the baby will make him think that I do." I look down.
"He won't. He knows that you're mine, Kay. You're mine and I'm yours. That's the way it is. That's the way it always will be." He pulls over to the side of the road.
"Louis, what are we doing?" I ask.
He gets out of the car and walks to my side, opening my door for me.
I look at him as I stand up.
"I love you, Kay. So much. So very much that I can't describe it. And I love Dylan. You're both the greatest things in my life and I want you to know that."
"I love you too, Louis." I smile.
He takes my hand and slowly gets down on one knee.
My eyes widen and I stare at him in disbelief.
"Kaleigh Marie Tompson, will you marry me?"
