Deer And Headlights

One thing I hate about the night shifts at Joe's is the fact that I wouldn't even get off until 11 pm, sometimes 1 am. I'm just happy it's finally Friday, meaning no school tomorrow.

Right this moment, I'm behind the counter, waiting to take somebody's order. It was pretty slow tonight and even though my mind is usually in the game, it's completely elsewhere. The only thing I could think about was the deer. No car could've done something like that. Not even another animal.

Sam, my partner for tonight— and also the manager— comes out from the back and leans on the counter. "You can go. It's getting pretty late, and I doubt anybody is coming in at this time." He told me to which I was completely grateful for.

"Thank god, I was about to fall asleep," I said. "Thanks, Sam." I went into the locker room and hung up my apron and hat, exchanging them for my personal belongings. I then proceeded to head out to the parking lot to my mom's car that I borrowed, wishing Sam a goodnight on my way out.

I sighed as I got into the driver's seat and started the car. The drive home so far was a calm breeze. It was quiet. Then, I slowly started to see flashing lights from up ahead, causing me to slow down. A figure in the distance held up their hands as a sign for me to stop. It was the Sheriff. He came around to my side of the car and leaned down to my level.

"Sorry, Ava. This road is closed." He said. "There's another deer. You're gonna have to go the other way around."

"What do you think is causing this?"

"For right now, we are ruling it as an animal attack."

"No animal is capable of something like this." I said.

"No human is capable of anything like this either." The sheriff said.

"Okay then, I'll reverse."

I turned my car around and started driving the other way around. The thing is, nobody ever comes this way at night due to there being no streetlights and it's completely dark. I was driving through this long stretch of very dark road until suddenly, a deer ran out from the forest, almost making me hit the damn thing.

I slammed on my breaks, making lurch forward as the deer came to a halt in front of my car. It just stared at me like a literal deer caught in headlights. I honked my horn once in an attempt to chase it away but to no avail. I just kept honking.

"Jesus fucking Christ! Move out of the wa—"

I was cut off by a huge black figure shooting out from the same way the deer came, and attacked it. Right here in front of me. The suddenness of it scared me shitless, causing me to scream. I jumped out my car and attempted to run, but was stopped by a huge dog...no. It was a wolf. This motherfucker was huge! It just stood there, staring at me. As if it knew who I was.

I on the other hand was damn near about to piss myself. My legs were shaking and I couldn't find it within myself to make a break for it. Then, I heard growling from behind me. It was a very low growl that can be felt it someone else's chest. I froze. Then, I slowly turned around to see another wolf behind me. This one, though, seemed more vicious. Only, it wasn't growling at me. I looked back to the wolf in front of me, to see it growling back.

I don't know what was about to happen, but I feared for my life. We don't have wolves here in Scarlet. Especially not these car-sized ones.

Then, the big wolf in front of me leaped forward, scaring me to the ground. They started fighting and growling. I could see their claws digging into each other. The other wolf saw me shuffling away and tried to get at me, only for the black one to ram it into my car. The harsh impact caused the alarm to go on. But over the blaring sound of the car siren, my head shot up to the sound of a high pitched yelp.

There, a few meters away, the black wolf stood over the dead body of the other. When it turned to me, I saw blood coating it's mouth and it was holding something in its teeth. It took me no time at all to realize what it was and as soon as I did, I blacked out.

This thing just ripped out his throat.
