Billie's pov
I parked my car in the garage and turned off the ignition, but never getting out. Not yet. There was a slight feeling of joy I had from finally being able to tell Ava the truth. But, there is also Finneas. If he found out, he will forbid me from seeing her again. And I can't not see her, not after today.
I sighed and dropped my head onto the steering wheel. "God, what am I going to do?" I muttered to myself.
A knock from the window startled me into sitting up quickly and checking to see who it was with my wolf eyes showing as a defense mechanism. I calmed down, though, after seeing it was only Claudia.
She signaled for me to get out of the car and I did, making sure to lock the door afterwards. Claudia smiled at me and scanned my face, a thing she does when she's concerned. "You okay?" She asked.
"Yeah. Never been better." I flashed a tight-lipped smile at my sister-in-law. "Why?"
"Nothing. I'm just asking. Finneas has been looking for you."
"Is he angry?" I couldn't help but ask.
"More....defensive, I think." Claudia turned to walk away and I followed after her.
As I came upon the office, I knocked, earning a quiet "come in" before entering.
"Billie, I've been looking for you. Where have you been?" Finneas asked. No signs of anger yet. That's good.
"I just came from dropping Ava home. By the way, I promised her a new car..." I played with my fingers nervously.
Finn just sighed and rubbed his forehead. "I'll take care of it." He said. "But for now, take a seat. I found something about this other pack."
I took a seat and moved closer to the desk that had a bunch of maps and old book on it from the library. The maps had circles drawn on them and the books at a lot of notes written in the pages.
"So, you see the werewolf you recklessly encountered?" I nodded along as he went. "He was a part of the Valerian pack."
"You're saying that with so much worry in your voice—"
"The Valerian pack, Bil, is one of the oldest packs in history and also the most powerful." Finneas kept talking and I listen carefully. "They actually originated from Scarlet and have been in hiding for centuries."
"Okay—"
Finneas glared at me, cutting me off entirely. "These guys aren't to be fucked with, Bil, you also can't trust them, these guys are known to play dirty. If you ever have an encounter with them, you need to tell me."
I looked at him nervously and slowly, the look of realization flashed across his face.
"You did, didn't you?" He gritted his teeth.
"I was going to tell you—" I stammered.
"WHEN?!" Finneas growled so deep, the entire estate shook. "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU'VE DONE? THEY HAVE YOUR SCENT, BILLIE!! THEY COULD'VE TRACKED YOU FOR ALL WE KNOW!"
"Finn, I swear I was going to tell you—but then you called me here and started talking about this other pack and—" I tried my best to explain my stupidity, but my brother wasn't having it.
"You are so lucky that we are blood related, because let me tell you something, if we weren't, I would've killed you for this!"
For my sake, I decided to keep my mouth shut. When Finneas and I were kids, we were inseparable. We were bestfriends growing up, but as soon as he became Alpha and our parents left the pack in his care, his priorities had changed. He not only had to take care of me, but an entire pack of only twenty seven werewolves and fifteen witches. I only learned how to shift last year on my 17th birthday, so I still have a lot to learn. Finneas understood that.
"We'll sort this out later." Finneas got up from his seat and started towards the door. "Right now, we need to brief everyone else about the Valerian pack and board up."
Before he could open it, the door bursted open, revealing a distraught Claudia who was breathing hard from running. "Something's happening."
That's all it took for us to break into a sprint and followed Claudia to the back fo the estate to see everybody running around in a panic. Some of the werewolves were already in their wolf form and I began to notice that most of our werewolves were gone.
"What's going on?!" Finneas shouted.
"Greg and Daniel were doing their usual rounds and didn't return for hours." Claudia began to explain. " I sent Evie to look for them and she found their bodies in the woods near the river."
"Wait— their bodies?" I asked and Claudia nodded. Oh god, what have I done?
"Where is Evie now?" Finneas asked.
Claudia looked around the grounds before pointing to a place near the edge of the woods. There, we saw Evie and a few of the healing witches emerge from the woods with all the other werewolves following behind them. Right away, I noticed two of the guys holding two bodies.
"Take them into the infirmary." Claudia instructed them and looked back at us with a sad expression on her face before turning to follow the men into the infirmary.
"I did this." I whispered.
"Don't do that. Don't blame yourself."
"But it's true! We both know it. None of this would've happened if I hadn't have killed that guy!"
Finneas turned towards me and put his hand on my shoulder. "You stop it right now!" He said. "I am the Alpha. That means that everything that happens in this pack is my fault. It was my job to teach you about handling things like this, as an alpha and as a brother. I've been hard on you, and I'm sorry."
I smiled before hugging him, burying my face into his chest. I don't know what I would do without him by my side.
"Thank you." I said before pulling away and looking up at him.
"Now, I gotta go check out the bodies and let everyone know what's happening. As for you, Billie, I need you to find your friend and bring her here."
"For what?" I asked.
"All of this is happening because you tried to protect her." He said, making me realize something. "You're not the only one they're after."
