Chapter 17

I fixed my brass basin under my armpit as I walked home. It was 4pm and I knew I could sell at least 2 bags of water before I would call it a day. Initially,if it had been 4pm and the water in my basin was finished, I would just go home and not return again but now it was a different case as I needed money and needed to put in more effort than before.

My steps got slower as I got near to Sister Owusuwaa's shop. From where I was, I couldn't see my mother yet I was not worried at all. "She has probably moved to the side of the shop because of the sun" I thought.

I began to get a bit worried as I got closer. My mother was not there and Sister Owusuwaa's shop was closed too. Standing in front of her shop, I looked around in confusion. "Well mommy is probably at home" I thought as I walked home. I reached out for the door leading to our room and yanked it but it was locked.

"What the hell?" I thought. It was 4pm and Crystal too was not around? Just as I was about to go out of the house, I saw Crystal coming towards me.
"Where's mom?" I asked as I walked towards her too. Behind her was Christian-one of the few guys I talked to around here-and he was holding a sleeping Mia in his arms.

"Sister Owusuwaa said call her" he replied before Crystal could, taking out his phone carefully so that he did not disturb Mia. My hand brushed against his slightly as I took the phone and quickly dialled Sister Owusuwaa's number.

"Lina" she said immediately after I picked up.
"Yes Sister Owusuwaa where are you? Where is mommy?"
"Lina we are at the hospital?"
"Hospital? Doing what?" I asked
"I had to rush your mother here Lina. She's been sent to the ER. We at the regional hospital, come immediately." She said.
I hanged up and gave the phone back to Christian, confused.

I had a quick battle with myself, contemplating whether I should leave Crystal and Mia behind. This place was unsafe and leaving them behind meant we could get robbed or worse. I didn't know the time I would return from the hospital so I couldn't leave them with Christian too.

"Mom's in the hospital, Sister Owusuwaa said we should come over." I said as I quickly opened the door and dropped Mia and Crystal's bags on the floor. Making sure that it was well locked, I placed the key in my pocket safely, patting it.

I stretched my hands towards Christian indicating that he should hand Mia over to me as I thanked him for giving me his phone and holding Mia.
"Let me escort you to the junction." He said as he smiled softly.

Walking quickly, I hurried to the junction, deep in thought. I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned only to be meet with the breathtaking features of Christian.
"Relax, she will be fine." He said with a smile.
I nodded slightly and gave him a little smile as we crossed the road.

Christian waved his hand around frantically, trying to stop a trotro for us. He finally got one and I motioned Crystal to sit inside as I took Mia from him. "She will be fine." He whispered, his mouth dangerously close to my ear as his breath tickled my neck lightly. I gave him another smile and sat in the trotro, waving him as the car sped off.

I tapped my foot impatiently as the driver drove agonisingly slow on the bumpy road, trying to avoid all potholes. From the corner of my eye, I saw Crystal giving the driver's mate a 50 cedi note and telling him that she was with me.

"Where did you get that from?" I whispered loudly, eyeing the change the driver had given to her. "Christian gave it to me when you were not looking" she said, a small smirk on her face. I sighed loudly and made a mental note to thank him.

Finally, we got to the hospital and I got out of the car quickly running through the hospital gate into the emergency room holding Mia tightly with Crystal hot on my trail.
