Chapter 24

The night went by fast and soon it was a new day. Today was the day I was going to sign the agreement at the bastard's house. I was literally going to sell my soul to him and my heart ached so badly whenever I thought of it. Yesterday,I had thought of backing out of the deal,but the sight of my sisters sharing three fingers of plantain rekindled the desire to go ahead with the deal.

The gloomy skies matched my mood and outfit perfectly. In my all black clothes,my tired eyes and fragile figure looked like it was ready to give up on life any moment from now. Walking to the bastard's house stress me out more. Yesterday, he told me to be there at 8:00am meaning I had to wake up very very early.

My eyes closed slightly as I walked in silence to the bastards house. If Ghanaians were not so judgemental,I would have just lay down on the streets for sometime and take a nap.

After a few minutes,I got to the bastard's house. Baba opened the gate after I rang the doorbell and the old man was once again happy to see me. I wanted to sit for sometime and talk to him but at the same time I wanted to just go inside and sign the agreement. I decided to go with the latter.

I knocked on the wooden door and the new house help opened the door wearing a shirt that showed so much cleavage and a some shorts. I wasn't one to judge,so I gave her a nod in acknowledgment and asked if the bastard was in his office.

She told me he was and I made my way there after taking in deep breaths.
"Come in" he called out after I knocked on the half open door. I walked in and stood opposite him nervously,slightly tapping my feet on the ground.

"Sit down." He said after I greeted him. I sat down quietly and focused on the piece of paper in front of him. From where I was sitting,I could see my name and that of another person who I supposed was the one I was going to work for.

"So I hope you remember the deal. You'll be working for him for a year . Ghc 450 a month. You'll be paid an advance of Ghc 300 before you start. Agreed?" He asked.
"Agreed." I said in a shaky voice as he moved the paper towards me and handed me a pen. I read through the words thoroughly,making sure that I agreed with everything that was written on the damn paper.

According to the paper, I was to start work the day after I signed the agreement but I asked the bastard if I could start two days after I signed the agreement and he said, "Sure. You can."
Somewhere in my heart,I felt like I was not just going to be a house help to him. I felt like I was going to be used for something else,but I just didn't know what.

I read through the paper again as the bastard drummed his fingers on the table rapidly. On the left side of the paper was a signature which had been signed by the person I would be working for. "Mr Kwasi Danso." The name read.
I looked to the right side and stared at the blank space underneath my name for sometime.

With shaky hands,I wrote my signature slowly with pain in my heart. I passed the signed paper to him,looking straight into his eyes. He smirked in satisfaction at the paper and brought his hand out to shake mine.
"Deal?" He asked as he shook his hand slightly. I stared at his hands for some time are averted my gaze. He retrieved his hand quickly and smacked it lightly on the paper.

Taking an envelope from the drawer,he counted Ghc 300 and gave it to me. I took the money and stashed it in my pocket carefully.
"I'll leave now." I said as I got up and turned to leave without waiting for him to say anything.
"He will come for you at 9am on Wednesday. Be here by then!" He yelled after me as I walked out of the house. After a few minutes of talking to Baba, I left the house deep in thought.

God,what have I gotten myself into?
