To many people, writing is basically something that people do when bored, but to me,writing is life. As a teenager growing up in the 21st century, depression and anxiety have somehow become apart of me.Being a child in Africa, I have little to no control over how things happen in my life(because my parents wont let me lol). Writing, however,is one of the few things I feel like I have full control over.Writing gives me the opportunity to create dashing scenes from my imagination which helps me to escape the harsh realities of life.
I am someone who can draw myself away from everyone and everything real quick, but I hate to see people and things going in the wrong direction when they can easily be corrected. My shyness and inability to communicate freely with people has pushed me to express my thoughts about certain things through writing.
In this book titled Melancholy,I express my thoughts on broken homes and how it affects individuals in a very unique and understandable way. I have had the chance to interact with Gifty,my cousin, and two other friends of hers(who both come from broken homes)and I have beautifully crafted this story with the information I received from our interaction coupled with ravishing and nerve-wrecking scenes from my wild imagination.
Mixing the African culture with modernization, versatility is ensured in this story which makes it possible for people all over the world to read and understand. The names, style of living and many more in this story also gives the reader an idea of how life in Africa really is and how beautiful our culture is.
Writing is an art which gets better with time and consistent practice. Melancholy is the second official book I have written, which means that it may not be up to expectations for some of you. Therefore,as a young author who is still practicing,I will very much appreciate if you give me your honest review on the story. Please feel free to point out all mistakes to me and how you think I can best correct it.
"Writing is a lonely journey",Lawrence Darmani once said. The talent to write is usually looked down at because of how we as Africans forget about some special talents and acknowledge the very common ones like singing and dancing which makes people who cannot sing or dance feel like they have no talent which should not be the case. Every talent is special and must be encouraged by all and sundry.
Thank you for believing in my potential and giving me this golden opportunity. I would like to plead with you to encourage people to embrace their talents no matter how strange it may seem, for it may be the gateway to greatness in Africa. "There are powerful forces undermining progress in Africa. But one must never underestimate the power of the people to bring about change." -Ama Ata Aidoo.
