RECAP OF THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER.
Taking an envelope from the drawer,he counted Ghc 300 and gave it to me. I took the money and stashed it in my pocket carefully.
"I'll leave now." I said as I got up and turned to leave without waiting for him to say anything.
"He will come for you at 9am on Wednesday. Be here by then!" He yelled after me as I walked out of the house. After a few minutes of talking to Baba, I left the house deep in thought.God,what have I gotten myself into?
_____________________I stirred the chicken stew carefully as my mouth watered. Making sure that the rice was well covered on the other coal pot I had borrowed from a neighbour,I gave Christian a small pat on the back and we both burst out laughing as he used a discarded cardboard to fan the coal pot.
Today was Tuesday meaning that this was the last time I was going to see my family and friends for a whole year. It seemed like a normal Tuesday to everyone who was around but they didn't know what was about to happen. All morning whiles my sisters were in school,I spent time at the hospital with my mother and returned back home around 1pm.
When I returned, I spent time with Sister Owusuwaa at her store where we laughed at almost everything, including those that were not even funny. Around 3pm,I went out to buy a few foodstuffs with the little money I had. I wanted to prepare a memorable dish for my sisters so I decided on rice and chicken stew. When I was returning home,I met Christian who escorted me to the house with the things I was carrying.
Like the gentleman he was,he decided to stay and help me with the food as my sisters played games on his smartphone.
Drinking some water from a cup,I looked around the place I had called home for the past 3 years and my eyes began to water. I knew I was going to miss this place terribly. Christian and I talked about random things and people as we waited for the food to cook.Once it was done, I dished into different plates for my sisters,Christian and I and we all sat in the veranda and ate in silence,a conversation or two popping up once in a while. As we ate,I thought about how I was going to ensure my sisters safety when I was away. I couldn't tell them to go and stay with Sister Owusuwaa since she lived with her fiancé, neither could I also tell Christian to come and stay with them. I mean,I trusted him,but not as much as leaving my sisters and all our possessions in his care. I had learnt my lesson on trusting people too much, and I now had trust issues.
"Or maybe you should let go of the past and try to trust good people again." My conscience said but I brushed it off.
Deep in thought,vI ate slowly as I ignored the heated conversation going on between Christian and Crystal about dogs and cats. Christian must have noticed this, for he poked me gently when no one was looking and asked if I was okay. I told him I was fine and began to clean up the place. I usually cleaned when I had much on my mind. It helped me to clear my mind and think more strategically.
After about an hour later,Christian left and my sisters and I cuddled in bed after we had taken our bath. Mia fell asleep after a few minutes and Crystal told me stories about school and this one guy who always checked up on her in school. I teased him with her amidst giggles and slight arm hits. After an hour or so, I encouraged her to go to bed since she had school the following day.
Sitting on the raffia mat,I thought about my decision again. When I went to the hospital,I had paid part of the bill with the Ghc 300 cedis and the little money I had gathered over the past few days. It felt good to know that my mother was being well taken care of now and that feeling pushed me to do more. I had left some money which I planned to leave behind for my sisters when I left.
Silently,I planned a secret route I could use without any one noticing me and looked for a bag I could pack my clothes into. I needed something small that would not raise any suspicions. I found one of Crystal's old bag and carefully hid it behind a stack of pots in the room so that she would not ask me any questions.
I turned off the light in the room after making sure that my sisters were comfortable and that the door was locked. Putting my head on the pillow placed in the middle of the hard raffia mat,I forced myself to sleep.
Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
