I searched the hallway frantically, trying to find Sister Owusuwaa. I finally found her in the later part of the hallway, sitting on one of the chairs with her head in her hand.
"Sister Owusuwaa!" I called as I got closer to her.
"Where's mommy? What is wrong? What happened? Why what-like how...." I bombarded her with questions as I handed a fully-awake Mia to Crystal.
"Calm down, calm down." She said as she motioned for me to sit. I stared at the plastic chair and shook my head."Sister Owusuwaa I can't sit, please tell me what is going on." I said trying to control myself as a few people stared at us shamelessly.
"Lina, your mother has been admitted. She started feeling pains in her legs so I was helping her home when she fell and fainted. Nii, Christian and a few other guys managed to bring her back to consciousness but she couldn't get up. We had to stop an empty taxi to bring her here. Upon arriving the doctors admitted her immediately, saying her condition had worsened."Taking everything in slowly,I sat on the chair and put my head in my arms.
The first thing I thought was "God, why?"
I looked over at Crystal who was looking at Sister Owusuwaa and sighed. We sat in silence for some minutes, the loud chatter from the people around us being the only sound breaking the silence."So now what?" I asked Sister Owusuwaa. She shrugged her shoulders slightly and sighed.
"Can I go and see her?" I asked.
"No, it will be visiting time at 6:30. We will have to wait till then." She replied.Deep in thought,I sat there quietly, only realising that it was 6:30 pm when Sister Owusuwaa touched my shoulder and pointed to the clock.
I got up and carried Mia, motioning Crystal to follow me. I took a few steps forward and looked back to see Sister Owusuwaa still sitting.
"Won't you come with us?" I asked her.
"It's 3 at a time." She said
"Oh...okay" I replied inaudibly as I walked towards the entrance of the ER.After a few seconds of searching, I saw my mom lying still in one corner of the room with a drip connected to her hand. "Mama" I called,my voice breaking. She turned to look at us and smiled a little, patting the side of the bed.
I placed Mia in the bed and sat behind her as Crystal leaned against the wall. I took my mother's hand and held it tightly as I controlled the tears that threatened to fall. "Mama what is wrong?" I asked her.
"I'm fine Seli, I'm fine." She said as she passed her other hand through Mia's hair.We talked for a bit as I asked her about her condition and what had actually happened. Soon, visiting time was over and we had to go. "Crystal,I won't be home for a couple of days. Please respect your Sister and help her, mm?" She said as I got up from the bed.
"Selinam" she said, diverting her gaze to me,"take care of my babies. Please"
"I will mom." I said quietly, controlling the tears.
"Baby girl, mommy loves you and she will be home soon." She said to Mia as she tickled her lightly.Grabbing Mia's hand, I gave my mother one last look and smiled painfully as I waved at her. We went back to the hallway and saw Sister Owusuwaa sitting down with her head leaned against the wall. Our footsteps forced her to raise her head as she looked at us quietly.
"Is she fine?" She asked.
"Yes please. Urm I want to speak to the doctor, do you know where he is?" I asked her.
She shook her head no, and after asking some very rude nurses and a few nice nurses for directions, we finally made it to the doctor's office. I left Crystal and Mia in the waiting room and Sister Owusuwaa and I entered to the office after knocking. After exchanging pleasantries, we sat down and I asked him about my mother, going straight to the point.
"Well I can't say she is fine but erh she will be fi-. We need to perform a surgery on her and that cost about 45,000 Ghana ced-. For the meantime she needs some drugs and you know the health insurance doesn't cover everythi-. That will total to about 2,500 Ghana ced-. Without the surgery anything can happ-, she can even di-. She needs to undergo the surgery as soon as possib-. For an estimate of her total bill see the receptioni-." He said flipping through some files.I stared at the man, angry. Why the hell couldn't he just complete his sentences?
What the hell did he think this was? An oral version of fill in the blank spaces?
Damn!
