I woke up in a cold sweat, hands frantically reaching for my stomach and let out a long breath as I realised it was just a nightmare. A horrible, godawful nightmare- but only that.
I sat up in bed, exasperated.
These nightmares were becoming a regular occurrence, I really need to do something about that.
Deciding that I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep, I hauled myself out of bed with a groan and checked the time on my phone.
2:30.
Great, I thought to myself, no sane human should be up this early. But I just sighed and made my way into my kitchen, heading straight for that sweet, sweet dark bean roast with purpose.
"Come to mummy." I grabbed the packet and brewed the sweet ambrosia that was coffee.
Sipping my drink, I sat down on my sofa, throwing a blanket over myself and flicking through the TV channels, nothing particularly catching my eye so I settled for the news.
"Next up, woman gives birth to fish?!?!"
"The hell." I giggled to myself. The news was really struggling to find stories to run- but I wasn't complaining- the stupid stories were always the best.
At the word fish, I heard a meow and looked down. "Hey, Yoko," I said scratching behind the tabby cat's ears which she took as an invitation to jump onto my lap.
Turns out the woman didn't actually give birth to fish, who'd thunk it. It was a whole publicity thing for a local seafood restaurant that rubbed quite a few people the wrong way. I made note of it, thinking it would be a good place to stop off one day before patrol.
OH SHIT, PATROL!
I darted up from my seat and ran into my room scaring Yoko, "Ah, sorry baby." I shouted back at her whilst throwing on my hero costume and giving myself a quick wink in the mirror before chugging down my coffee and sprinting out my window and down the fire escape of the building. The front door was too much of a hassle and I didn't want my neighbour complaining about the noise.
Ever since I'd gotten my hero license I began doing patrols at night. I had never really wanted to join a hero agency- the idea of going rogue always seemed appealing to me- and the thought of being someone's sidekick really didn't excite me either.
So I work alone.
I know, I know, very edgy. But it just feels right. And anyways I liked my day job. Café owner by day~ edgy hero by night. What more could I want?
I mean, rather than a stable relationship with someone who didn't mind never seeing me when they got home because I was off frolicking with petty theft and some wayward villains every now and then. And I haven't even got to my personality. I might have a banging bod but gods above that personality. That's why as much as I'd like to snuggle up on the sofa shouting the wrong answers to the TV whilst watching shitty quiz shows with my ~lover~, I'm starting to let reality sink in a bit more.
"God I need to work out more," I mumbled, out of breath as I stopped in the middle of the new patrol zone I'd been scouting out for a while.
I looked around at the area, its quiet streets illuminated by a few lamps and the open signs of a small convenience store and a 24-hour cafe. There was a charm about it.
Pulling a hook from my utility belt, I aimed it at the top of the nearest building and pulled myself up in an attempt to get to a better vantage point. I landed on the roof -quite gracefully I may add- and looked at the streets below, making sure they matched with the map in my mind.
