Draco POV

The dark mark was arranged to form above the astronomy tower and I was battling with time to get there. Pacing through the corridors, I wondered not about how dark they had turned in abrupt the closer I got to where the stupid old man stood.

Fate had set this exact date to be the darkest night at the castle that even the moon couldn't cast shadows on the ground. Yet I wot the truth that said anywhere a Death Eater went, a huge atrocious, shadowed soul followed—that included me as had the Dark Lord imprinted the foul mark on my arm.

My steps grew heavier with each staircase my feet laid on. The craven voice yelled a plea for me to go back, wake Y/N and run as far as we can until we find somewhere safe to stay, away from the shattered mess that tailed us.

But who am I to fight against destiny?

All causes to hesitate rose at once as soon as I caught sight of the old man—not wearing any bloody hat this time, what a shocking scene to behold. Dumbledore didn't look surprised to see me which actually surprised me, made me question whether he already knew his life would end any minute now.

I directed my wand at him, trying so hard not to let my hand quiver like a weakling. He accused me of whispering to myself when I suspected him talking with someone here. I did whisper sometimes—as an excuse to reassure the coward side of me.

"Draco . . . you are no assassin."

I know I am not.

"How do you know what I am? I've done things that would shock you!"

The corpse-to-be headmaster proceeded to mock the attempts I initiated to kill him, saying I didn't put my heart in every trial I did. What made him think I would put my whole heart to murder a man like him when the most of the time, I agonised whether my act would make Y/N hate me more or not. She had my whole heart, and heart knew who to prioritise.

"I was chosen!" I rolled up my sleeve to show him the cursed skull mark.

"Does she know?" He asked, "Does Y/N Richards know what you're up to?"

Bringing up my girlfriend to this conversation surely held me back for a moment. But I knew it was a trick for him to get away and I wouldn't fall for it.

"It doesn't matter if—"

"Honesty is the key principle in a relationship. Have you considered the betrayal she would feel when she found out? Will you be able to bear having to see her reaction to you being a part of her parents' murder case? You still have time to rethink your decision, Draco."

"I didn't murder her parents!" I shouted.

"Yet you're now one of the Death Eaters, are you not? She won't see the difference. Hatred will forthwith replace the love that once lived. Do yo—"

"Shut up! I know what I'm doing. Any kind of solution you can come up with, I've pondered them first and none of those is gonna work. This is the only way and I'm doing it for her!"

"Does she want you doing this for her?" Said Dumbledore, slowly raising his wand.

His question stabbed me through the heart. Y/N wouldn't want me to become a villain—even more when she knew she was the reason I had to become one. Though she knew I would be willing to kill for her, she never let me do so. She never wanted me to be this kind of person.

No, he's just messing with my mind.

"She will—Expelliarmus!"

That was close.
