Alisha Reign Norman sat in potions class, her mid drifting completely from the lesson. Her eyes were red from crying all night, and her head was pounding in pain. She had only gotten a few hours of sleep, having fallen asleep at four AM. Professor Snape droned on and on, but Alisha paid no attention.
When Professor Snape allowed them to start working on their potions, she turned towards her table partner, Gregory Goyle. She rolled her eyes at him, knowing that as usual, he wouldn't be of any help. She glanced over at the table next to her. Their potions book was opened to a page that read Draught of Peace at the very top. Alisha flipped open her own textbook, turning to the appropriate recipe.
"Get a cauldron," she told Goyle plainly. The boy nodded, going off to grab a cauldron from the corner. Alisha made her way to the ingredient cabinet, grabbing powdered moonstone, syrup of Hellebore, powdered unicorn horn, powdered porcupine quills, and Valerian root.
She set the ingredients down on her and Goyle's shared table. He had already returned with a cauldron and stirring rod. Alisha got to work on the potion, following the instructions exactly. Goyle watched nervously as silver vapour was released from the cauldron.
"Good job, Ms. Norman. Ten points to Slytherin," Professor Snape announced, his face holding no expression. Alisha attempted to give him a small smile, but it came out weak, and tired.
Professor Snape walked away, completely ignoring the fact that Goyle did absolutely nothing. Alisha could hear Hermione Granger grumbling about it from a near-by table.
As Alisha left potions class, she heard Hermione's voice whispering to Harry and Ron.
"Did you see Alisha's eyes? They're so red. She must have been crying," Hermione whispered. Harry and Ron both rolled their eyes at their friend as they continued walking.
"So what? She probably deserved it, she's a Slytherin after all. Probably did some foul thing that came back to bite her in the arse," Ron said. Hermione scoffed. "If you two paid any attention, you would know that Alisha is not like the others. Her best friend is a muggle-born in Hufflepuff," she said. Ron shrugged.
Alisha sighed, shaking her head. She was used to hearing things like that, seeing as the Wizarding World was full of prejudice towards the Slytherin house.
Alisha stood next to Emma as she reached the Herbology greenhouse. The American girl smiled widely at the girl, but it dropped as she took in Alisha's dull appearance.
"Have you been crying again?" Emma asked. Alisha shook her head.
"I just didn't get enough sleep." It wasn't a complete lie, but Emma could still see right through it. Before she could say anything, class began, making Emma turn her attention from her best friend to the Herbology professor slowly. Emma stole small glances at Alisha during class, but the Slytherin stared at the ground the whole time. Emma let out a breath as she started to work on their plants.
___
To Alisha, it felt like eternity before they were finally allowed back to their dorms. Alisha said a quick goodbye to Emma before making her way to the dungeons.
"Password?"
"Emerald," Alisha answered. The stone wall revealed a door, leading her to the Slytherin common room. Most of the Slytherins hung out in the common room, but Alisha always preferred to stay in her dorm alone for a while.
"Where are you going, Norman?" Draco called out. Alisha stopped in her tracks, turning towards Draco and his gang. "Where does it look like, Malfoy?" she asked sarcastically. Draco scoffed, turning back towards his friends. Alisha rolled her eyes, continuing on her journey to her dorm.
