EBONY
After dessert, everyone headed outside towards the back of the house. Zena gasped when she saw what was out in the back. A huge bouncy. There were carnival games. Cotton candy and so much more. She immediately grabbed Esmee who was holding hands with Kevin and the three of them zoomed away. Happy giggling trailing behind them. Mason turned to look at me when we lost sight of Zena and them. He grabbed my hand and trailed little kisses across my palm. I smiled at him sweetly.
"Listen Ebony don't mind my dad. He's gonna come around. Give him some time. My mom warms up to people way faster as you already know, but my dad...he is a little hard-headed." Mason pleaded with me. I nodded my head. Dismissing what he was saying. I buried myself in Mason's arms. His expensive perfume engulfed me. We fell into a comfortable silence. It was silent until it wasn't. Mason pulled away from me when we heard a commotion coming from inside the house. Particularly the kitchen.
From the window, you can see that someone was wrestling with another person. One was clearly a woman. Her body was feminine and one was a man, a little stubby though. I gasped when they turned around Anna and Mr. Rosado. People outside started to scream in alarm when they saw who they were as well. Mr. Rosado pushed Anna to the ground. He doesn't waste any time as he runs outside. My blood goes cold when I see what is in this hand. A gun. Micheal runs up to him and attempts to get the gun away from him but he freezes when his father pulls the gun on him. Mason's grip on my arm becomes tighter and tighter.
I pull away from him and look around for Zena. I had to find her, there was a dangerous man with a gun on the loose. I couldn't see her. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. He's a mad man. I get excited when I see her. I run-up to her. My heart breaks when I see tears streaming down her face. She was traumatized. She clings to me tightly. Esmee is next to me, concern etched on her face. " Esmee go get the car!" She nodded quickly and dashed away.
I turn around. Someone is coming from the back to tackle Mr. Rosado. Anna. Before she can tackle him he pulls the trigger. The gun was aimed right at me. I close my eyes.
MASON
My mouth goes dry as I watch my father pull the trigger. Seeing but being too far to do anything. The bullet doesn't touch Ebony but she is screaming. Zena.
EBONY
My body is present yet it feels absent. I'm cold but I'm hot. Oh my God, oh my god. I feel Zena's sticky blood coat my fingers as she slumped against me. No. Her little arms that were wrapped around my neck loosen. I feel as if my world is crashing down. Why did it have to be her? Why? I feel a presence next to me. Mason. He pulls me away from Zena and carries her away quickly. I feel so in shock I let him take her. Esmee is next to me and holding my hand. She pulls me and I go with her.
Tears are running down my face fiercely. I can't hear myself over the loud drum of my heart, but I know I'm sobbing. I'm put into the back of an ambulance. Next to Zena. Her lips are blue. Her skin is ashen. She looks dead. The thought of Zena being dead makes my heart have palpitations. I start to dry heave. A medic pushes me back to lay against the wall of the van and puts one of the medical air masks he put on Zena on me. I start to breathe better but I'm still in pain. I see Mason and Esmee following behind the ambulance. I close my eyes. I pray and pray and pray.
Time-lapse: 3 hours
MASON
I sit in the sitting room between Ebony and Esmee. Ebony is sitting. Her backbone straight and her eyes facing forward and unblinking. Esmee is slouched and staring at the ground, and I can't stop giggling my leg. I stand up abruptly when the doctors come towards us. I'm not just realizing I've been to the hospital three times now in less than 4 months. The news the doctors give us is neutral. Not bad but not great. Zena is alive but she is in a coma. But not for too long as they calculated. Around a week or two.
Ebony immediately went over to the bed and hugged Zena when we were allowed into the room. She held onto her for a long time. I looked at the time. Esmee looked at me wearily as I went over to Ebony and pried her off. She was reluctant to let go. My heart ached to see the two people I adored so much be in such a horrible situation. Ebony cried all the way home. When we got there I ran her a hot bath and gave her the whole carton of ice cream. She was even too tired and out of strength to eat it. She only laid there and cuddled me. She didn't speak and she didn't move.
Esmee made pumpkin pie which she liked but still. Nothing. It was as if she was dead inside. She slumped against me on the couch. I didn't realize she was crying silently into my shirt until I felt a wet patch on my chest. By that time, Ebony was asleep. Tears still rolled down her cheeks even when unconscious. Her face was puffy and reddened from all the crying. I felt my own eyes swell with tears. I pulled her closer to me and she nuzzled her head in my neck in return.
EBONY
"Zena run, run, it's coming. Go faster! Please Zena I'm scared-HURRY!" But I'm too late. It caught up...Blood. So. Much. Blood
I wake up with a start when the face of Zena's pale face stares into my soul. Mason shushes me and holds me closer. I can't help it. I start to sob again.
