EBONY

"Come on y'all we don't want to be late! He's counting on us!" I called out as I dressed Oliver. He smiled his sweet little smile at me. He wasn't toothless anymore. Two tiny teeth were sprouting on his top gums. He tried to fight me every time I gave him milk instead of rice. I dressed Oliver in a cute blueish purple onesie, they complimented his eyes. The same shade as his father. I put Oliver in his car seat and head downstairs. "Ebi! Am I a Cali baby?!" Zena asked loudly holding up a pink crop top with the words Cali baby written in cursive.

"Well yea, of course, Zena we are in California aren't we?" I answered a small smile playing On my lips. She squealed happily and ran off, putting the shirt on. Oliver cooed in his car seat. And reached his arms out when Mason comes around the corner a huge smile on his face. Looking sexy as ever. "Babe you look delicious. Literally" Mason purred at me. He kissed my neck seductively and reached to play with Oliver.

I wore a light purple satin dress

I gasp when I feel Mason's large hand come into contact with my ass

I gasp when I feel Mason's large hand come into contact with my ass. " Babe!" Mason grins widely at me. I can't help but laugh at him. I pack Oliver some formula and some snacks for Zena. In no time We all file into Mason's car. And we drive away, our destination. Dad's house. I remember when Mason used to have a driver. But now he refuses any such thing. He wants us to have as much family time as we can get even if it's in the car. Having an employee intrude doesn't sit well with him. I on the other hand couldn't care less. As long as someone is driving.

"So what did you get him for his birthday?" I asked Mason. He flashed me a smile. "Oh no, you don't, because then if I tell you, your gonna find a way to leave the party and one-up me!" Mason's chuckle was Baritone. I gasped in mock horror. " Whaatt?! I would never!" I lied knowing damn well that was exactly what I was gonna do. Mason always caught onto my bullshit except for the time where I went to visit Jensy without telling him and she attacked me. After he told me not to go. There was no way I was ever going to tell him. It's quite embarrassing anyway.

Time-lapse: 30 mins

Mason comes to a stop when we reach our destination. There sat a beautiful home. Painted Light blue, with white petunia flowers grouped beautifully in the little baskets hanging from the veranda ceiling. This house was adorable. But It was hard to believe that this is where my dad lived now. Out of New York and in California. With a little blue house. So different from my childhood. Mason had opened the passenger door for me while I was lost in my thoughts. I thanked him sweetly and stepped out. My already dewy skin was sun-kissed and bright. Mason held Oliver and handed me his car seat. Oliver laid his head on his father's chest lovingly. We followed as Zena ran ahead of us.

The blue door on the blue house opened before we could knock. A woman opened the door.  I felt my insides chill. I bared a striking resemblance with her and there was no way we could deny that we were family.  Besides, I knew that face anywhere. That hair, those teeth, Her nose, just like mine. Even if I were blind, my fingertips would tell me. Mom. from the corner of my eye I saw Mason do a double-take. " Woah! who is this? your Aunt? You guys look exactly the same!" Mason's grin was wide. I was frozen. I stared at her and she stared back. Her lips were in a small smile. A tentative look on her face. She took a step forward and reached out her hands. She spoke our native tongue to me.

" Twi: Bra ha me abɔfra. fa kyɛ me. ɛfiri sɛ ma di wo bɔne. // English: Come here, my child. Forgive me. For I have wronged you." I couldn't move I was frozen. This lady who called herself my mom had left me when I was very little. Claiming to be unhappy with my father and me. Yes, things will get rough but why did she leave? I felt so unloved. Dad remarried some money-seeking, gold-digging skunk who took all of his money. No wonder he wasn't living in a skyscraper in New York. His pockets must have been dry.  And she's dead. Pathetic. My mom sighed. " Please love, come to me I'm so sorry." She held her arms out to me again. Deep down in my heart, I missed my mother. But my brain would not allow me to cave in and hug her.

I was so angry, tears threatened to spill. Well, I was already crying, might as well speak my feelings. "Mom you left for so long and then the lady dad remarried was so horrible and greedy. She wouldn't even stock up on pads but she would stock up on silverware and shoes. Sometimes I would have to go to school with a roll of tissue paper because she was so inconsiderate and dad was brainwashed with her " charm." I really hated her and I missed you so much and I wished you would come home. Every. Single. Day. But you never came!" I was a blubbering mess. Mason was looking at my mom, shocked. And Zena was hiding behind him.

My mom took this opportunity to come over and hug me. And even though I was angry I hugged her back. Our embrace was strong and hard. My tears soaked into the shoulder of my mom's sweater. " I'll make it up to you. I swear I will." I nodded my head. That was when my dad stepped out of the house. Wearing a pink dress shirt and a black fedora. "Hey yall what did I miss?" We couldn't help but laugh at him. My mom wrapped her arm around my waist as we went inside the house. The rooms looked bright and colorful. It turns out the party was at the back of the house. There was a huge bouncy castle for the kids. Zena ran to the bouncy castle. Which made Oliver start to cry.

I smiled at Mason and went to the cocktail bar. Leaving him with a crying Oliver to deal with. There were strawberries with chocolate fountains you could dip them in. There were ice creams of all different tastes and textures. There was a long table and take-out plates. The delicious aroma of fried sweet plantain and spicy rice and chicken reached my nose.  This party is gonna be awesome. I LOVE food. I looked back to see if Mason had calmed down Oliver yet. I smile as I watch Mason hand over Oliver to my mom. Oliver looks at my mom and then smiles. He reaches for her hair and then decides to hold on for dear life.

I see Mason back away slowly as my mom struggles to pry his strong baby grip away from her hair. I hear Mason's chuckles as he comes closer. "He's not our problem anymore for the time being. Abuelita seems to know what she's doing." Mason smiles at me as I hand him a flute of sparkly champagne. "Gracias, baby!" I laugh at his words.
