Eliza and Alex were taking a hike in the woods.
Eliza stopped to pick up a purple flower with small flower buds tracing up and down the stem. She tucked it behind her ear.
Then, a few minutes later she fell to the ground and threw up.
"Oh my god! Eliza, are you okay? We should go home," Alex suggested.
She shook her head, "No. Hospital," she managed to croak out.
"O-okay. I'll call an ambulance."
"Hello, this is 9-1-1. What's your emergency?"
"I was taking a hike with my wife, and she suddenly fell to the ground and I don't know what to do," Alex explained.
"Okay, does she have any underlying health conditions that may have caused this?" the operator asked.
"No, she's healthy," Alex said.
"Okay, do you know what might have caused this?"
"No."
"Okay then, what's your location?" the operator asked.
Alex said where they were.
"Alright, an ambulance is on the way. Take her to the parking lot so they can reach her easier," the operator told him.
"Okay, how long until they get there?" Alex asked.
"They should get there in 15-20 minutes."
"Okay, thank you," said Alex before hanging up.
Alex grabbed Eliza and carried her bridal style to the parking lot.
"A-Alex, do you think I'm going to be okay?" Eliza asked.
"I don't know," he admitted. "The ambulance is going to get here soon and hopefully they'll be able to help you."
"And if they can't?"
"Let's not think about that."
When the ambulance finally arrived, Eliza was doing horrible. Alex was trying to comfort her but it was hard when Eliza could hardly even breathe.
"Thank god you're here. You can help her, right?" Alex asked the first responders.
They hauled Eliza into the ambulance and took the flower out from behind her ear.
"Where did you get this?" They asked.
"She found it on the trail. Why?"
"It's monkshood. It contains aconite, one of the deadliest poisons on the planet."
"What! You can still help her, right?" Alex asked, desperate.
"I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do," they said.
"Alex, I-I don't want to die," Eliza said.
"Don't worry sweetie, everything will be okay," he turned to the first responders. "Please there has to be something you can do. You can't just let her die!"
"I'm so sorry. If she has any family nearby, would you like to call them so they can be with her?"
"No! Stop talking like that! You have to help her!" Alex pleaded.
"I'm so sorry, but there really isn't anything we can do."
Alex kept on trying to make them help her. Eventually, he gave up and called the Schuyler's over so she could be with her family.
Everyone was there trying to hide their tears. They assumed that Eliza didn't want to see them crying in her final moments.
And then she flatlined.
