20- Terrible mistakes

'Friends huh?'

Gaara drove into the parking lot of the hotel he was lodging at temporarily and pulled up. After ensuring that his car was locked, he walked to the elevator and punched in the digits of the floor he was going to. The redhead collapsed on to his bed without even bothering to remove his clothes.

It was lonely.

Gaara lazily fished out his phone from his pocket and went to the gallery. There was only one picture in his media. Gaara clicked on it. His lips pulled upwards into the beginnings of a smile at the picture. It turned out beautifully.

He had taken a sneak shot of Tenten at the ice cream shop when she was pondering over which flavor of ice cream to choose. Her eyes were bright with excitement at the many choices she had to choose from. She had the prettiest smile too. A finger caressed her picture fondly but he stopped, leaving it hovering above the picture unsurely. Memories of the day came back to him.

"I'm sorry." Gaara stepped back promptly and avoided eye contact with Tenten.

"No it's okay, it was my fault for being so clumsy. It's getting kind of late, let's get going." Tenten started walking towards Kaguya tree but stopped when she realized that Gaara was not following. "Gaara?" She called out.

There was no response from the man except for the steps that he took towards her. Tenten gasped at the sudden determination in his eyes but underneath that determination, she could see fear in those green eyes.

"Tenten-san..." Gaara started. He inhaled and let it out softly. "I like you. I have liked you for quite a while now and my feelings towards you are serious."

"Eh?!" Tenten's eyes widened. She was not expecting this confession at all. "Eto...you know I am with Neji, don't you?" She asked just to be sure.

"I do."

"And you still..." Tenten sighed. How would she put this? "I am really flustered that you have feelings for me and everything but..."

"You don't like me that way." Gaara completed her sentence for her.

"Yes."

"I see. If ever Neji and you break apart, would you give me a chance?" There was hope in his voice that Tenten really didn't want to shatter but she had to do so.

"Gaara." Somehow, Gaara knew from the tone of her voice that he would not like what she was going to say. "I like you but not romantically. You are just as a younger brother to me. Even if Neji and I break apart which would not happen so soon, I do not see myself with you."

"Neji's exact words." Gaara whispered. His bangs shadowed his expression but it was clear that the rejection got to him.

"I'm sorry, Gaara." Tenten apologized. She was really sorry for him. Unrequited love was the most painful sort but Tenten was sure that he would find somebody that suited him perfectly.

Gaara shook his head. "No. I knew this would happen. I just...didn't think that the reality of it would hurt this much. Let's get going, Tenten-san."
